About me: I'm new to the PNW Kent (98030) area, about to be done unpacking boxes (I moved here from Texas ) and after I bought a house the 2nd purchase was a R1200GS-Adv at South Sound BMW (I sold my 09 R12GS Adv (I put on 28k miles) in TX so I could move "light"). So now I'm looking to meet-up with local ADV riders, share GPS routes (basically... you share since I have none right now - unless you're interested in Arkansas and TX Hill country), meet-up and be part of the ADV-Riders community I hear is so great up here! PM me if you know about rides and/or meetups that are open to "newbees"... I'm eager to start exploring the area... Tag me along...
Did you just pick your bike up a couple weekends ago? I was in shopping around and they had one all set with panniers and I think it was a sargent seat, waiting for it to be picked up.

If so, it was a beauty

April Fools Ride

April Fools Ride

Seven Port Townsend riders met at the Water Street Creperia for a sunny afternoon ride to visit another local rider promising brauts and beer. Ray lost a leg to diabetes and was moving into a single level house, giving up the log home that he'd built himself. His off-the-grid house sits above Tarboo Creek about 20 miles South of Port Townsend at the end of a long, steep, muddy drive strewn with loose rock and slick leaves. Fortunately for the big bikes and sidecar a turn-around just below the house offered a convenient excuse not to negotiate the last two switchbacks. The day had turned dark and drizzly by the time we got there and Ray's big wood stove was a welcome way to grill the brauts.

Ray's house with solar panels, propane range and refridgerator, and chimney for the wood heat.

The wood stove with an old boiler door

The million dollar view of the Olympics and the farm valley along Tarboo Creek

Here's a group shot of Robert, John, Sidecar Les, Ray, Ric, Honda shop owner Jim and myself.

Here's another group shot

After lunch we set out to walk off the brauts and tour the estate. Between the generator/storage battery shed and the big spring Jim found a jug and settled in for a stay.

Here's Ray on his “mobility mower” next to the spring that supplies his water.

The lowest, or frog pond

The Big(really big) Fish Pond

Artsy waterfall at the frog pond

Appropriate yard art

Ray built all of this by hand or with a small dozer he owns between construction jobs. The house is log but has massive steel posts, beams and brackets. Lining the stairwell are photos and maps of his road trips on a long list of bikes spanning over 40yrs.
Everyone made it down the hill without a spill and took varying routes home as the sun came out to warm things up. I saw this bobcat hunting in a pasture along 101 and stopped to watch for 10 minutes or so. My little camera just won't bring him close enough. Time for and upgrade....

GUILTY!

2009 R1200GS-A
12,891 miles

ESA, Heated Grips, Fog Light, ABS, COMP, aftermarket Sargent, larger bash plate, fuel injectors protection and enlarged hand protectors.
The bike was sold and serviced at South Sound, with the exception of the 6k miles service - this was done in Alaska.

Anyone knows anything about this bike and it's prior adventures? VIN: ZW85724

Thanks Dave for sharing that story. Your friend has quite an impressive spread. Love that wood stove.

Vintage Bikes

Saturday the 14th was the last regular monthly meeting of the WVM before the big swap meet on Saturday the 28th of April. A warm sunny day brought lots of bikes out to plan for the big event at the Skagit County Fairgrounds.

A '51 BSA M35?

Kawasaki 500 Two Smoke This thing had pipes from Poland that made it look like it had been assembled of industrial left overs but it wailed like a modern GP bike. Man, I get goosebumps at that shriek when it smells like castor oil.

Rare? '84 VFR400

A super clean SR500

Pimped out 74ci HD flathead

Old bikes are cool but so are '39 Plymouth coupes. This one had '50's vintage speed equipment and dual carbs

New Triumph Classic Thruxton

'48 Vincent
We had to push start this one when it flooded while kicking.

And lastly a very sanitary Guzzi

Enjoy

Very enjoyable, thank you. But seriously, I'm a member of Washington Vintage Motorcylists in Mt Vermin and Jim Minnish's Honda shop is a social hub of most things two wheel in Port Townsend. The VME has similar chapter meetings around the Sound where vintage bikes gather. There are brand specific groups like HOG, Triumph Riders, Ducatistas and Motogiro. During better weather there's a get together weekly in Ballard. It looks like fun, but it makes a long school night from here.

Wynoochee Ride 4/21

Saturday 4/21

Steven led us on a ride out to Lake Wynoochee, from Shelton, Saturday. FR23 was still blocked by snow forcing us to ride via Matlock and the 2260rd. Finally, the weather was quite warm, actually forcing some of the dozen riders to seek shade at the stops.
Once at the lake we tried to run up 2374 to gain a vista or two for the riders whom had never been to the area. Not to be...

This forest aristocrat had fallen across the road and while this one could easily be ridden under...

The smaller trees beyond could not

From 2374 here are the hills North of the lake

and West across the lake

The pleasant temperatures created lots of snowmelt cascades along the roads

The bikes lined up at the dam overlook

At the campground, the “Where Too Now?” committee meets

It was decided to ride Donkey Crk Rd (FR22) out to 101 with some of us returning by the same route and others continuing on to Copalis Beach and points beyond.

West Fork of the Humptulips

West Fork of the Satsop

The Canyon River near the East end of 2260

Thanks Steven!

Blackboots and I will be riding from the Longhouse, near Seven Cedars casino, in Blyn tomorrow. Meet there at 9:30 for coffee then check snow levels whilst riding South and East toward Quilcene and Brinnon. Dave

Bike Maintenance-doh!!!

Doing a major service on the Bimmer today, I cut the foil top out of the gear oil bottle and set it on the bench for later disposal. Hours later I picked up a rag to wipe the dipstick before filling with oil and the foil flipped across the walkway and into the oil fill hole. Here's what it looked like when the pan was dropped...

'Got a good look at how clean the engine is inside, but let's not do that again! DD
