Suggestions for WRC New Zealand Rally trip/ june 2012 ?

HI ALL , hope I am posting in the right place

The rally action (21- 24 june 2012) taking place on roads throughout the Northland, Auckland and Waikato regions. During this time, My Friend and I are planning a 10 days trip in (15 - 25) June of 2012 through Auckland . This is our first big trip, so we're hoping to take in as much as possible. We'd like to stick largely to roads, but would also like to adventure off of the road as well, maybe about 70-30.

We are talking about renting a bike . Obviously, I want something adv-related (seems a GS is the best choice available).
We plan to have camping equipment with us and would prefer to camp out in interesting places in order to reduce costs and have an awesome, adventure-y experience wherever we go.

We are not sure exactly where we want to go.
Would love some route, stop, etc suggestions.
weather? just wondering what I should expect?
Anyone have any thoughts as to the best place to rent a bike?

Suggestions???

I would like to see if anyone is serious about joining and we can then do some detailed planning.

Were it me, I'd be researching the past Rally stages. The Motu is one (bisects the East Cape). The Waikato guys can chip in with the circuit nr Raglan (Pirongia? - we did that on a King Country Adventure ride a while ago). Build on the theme...

Check what your rental co will allow you to do. Some don't allow the GSs off sealed road.

Generally the weather is settled to mid-late May then packs a sad. So pack for wet & cold. Probably better to look at hiring cabins rather than camping.

Also check out the FAQ sticky.

So it looks like I'll have only 6 days for exploring NZ , not enough time to see both North and South

Nope.

I think the WRC stays quite close to Auckland now so if you want to see some more of NZ you may be best to range a bit further afield as well as taking in some of the Rally. Coromandel, a lap of the East Cape then return back through the Motu as suggested above or a foray down the West Coast & back up via Whangamomona, Tongariro etc.

June is usually shit for camping but take the gear anyway as you never know what the weather will do.

Cheers
Clint
