Anyone a MAC Guru?

I have a 17" MBP. Latest version OS. Safari for the browser.

I have picked up an audio effect from a website that a I can't get rid of. The sound of a door opening, then closing, so its in two parts.

The bloody thing plays at random. Sometimes a lot, sometimes bugger all.

I have tried deleting the history and cookies but its still there. I have also searched every friggin' folder I can, but I still can't find it.

Anyone able to shed some light?

Only happens when you're in Safari?
Are there any weird open popup windows running in the back when it happens?

You can reset Safari from the menu bar.

If that doesn't work, check to see if you have safari extensions turned on,
turn them all off, or one at a time to find the offending extension.
The is done from the same menu bar, select prefs, then extensions panel.

One last thing, run software update and check for anything new to DL.

Somebody's knockin' at the door . . .

Very frustrating. By no means a Mac guru, but a long time user. If I'm right, it's something PC users might experience too.

It seems like I can remember encountering the sound you describe in conjunction with an IM or chat application. The opening door sound would play when someone entered the chatroom or logged onto the IM service, and the closing door sound was associated with someone leaving or logging off. Is it possible you have something like Yahoo Messenger or something similar running without your realizing it - maybe even set up to run whenever your computer boots up?

There's probably a sexier way to do it, but the simpleton's method of seeing what apps you have running is to click hind finder and then shut down the open apps as they appear on your toolbar. One of them may be an IM or chat app you didn't know was running.

If that turns out to be the case, hopefully someone else here can tell you how to take the annoying thing off of your startup list. If not, the info should be readily available in an Apple Support document or a MacForums thread.

Good luck!

Like marcopolo says...

The only time I've heard that sound on a Mac is when there's an IM/chat window open. Somebody entering, and leaving the chat room.

There's no such things as viruses on a Mac. Everybody knows that.

Thanks for the replies so far. (Except for Lobby.)

I don't have any programs set up as auto start and I never use things like ichat.

When it occurs only Safari is running and theres no pop ups.

I will try resetting safari and see how that goes.

you could try some decent software called " clean my mac"..gets rid of goofy things that are not always easy to find and of course frees up valuable space on hard drive. I got it after checking on the mac forum site...works for me.

I know you said that iChat wasn't running, but I think it is running but hidden somewhere.

I checked and if ichat is running I don't how it is. The door opening/closing in ichat is not the same one I'm hearing play at random.

I turned off extensions in safari preferences. Theres nothing in there anyway and its made no difference.

Not much to go on, but since it seems you have isolated the problem to Safari...

Try to fully reset Safari. From the menus, Safari -> Reset Safari. Select everything, reset. If you want to try a slightly smaller hammer first, you can just try selecting the indicated items.
