Final Drive Problems 3000 Miles From Home

OK, So I have been on the road for seven weeks and I am currently in Salinas, CA. On a whim I checked my rear wheel and noticed quite a bit of play. I had the final drive bearing replaced before I left home and no problems until now. I checked and the dealer in Santa Cruz in kaput, so I will be headed for San Jose tomorrow. GPS says it is 60 miles. Here's hoping I make it!

Venting complete. I feel better now.

I live here right in the area where you are now.
If you need a tow to SJ BMW, just let me know. I'm sending you a PM with my cell number.

I Have truck + Kendon trailer at the ready. Oh, and plenty of experience in trailering my BMW bikes...

Looks like you may have found some help. I don't think I would ride the 101 or Hwy 1 with a loose rear wheel. I hope you get it sorted without much hassle.

Thanks, it's not THAT loose. My GPS says it is 63 miles from where I am to San Jose BMW. I have not felt anything while actually riding the bike. I'm taking the 101 and hoping for the best!

I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow.

If you are around Santa Cruz and your bike is out of warranty you might consider The Beemershop in Scotts Valley. May be less expensive than a dealer and I would trust owner Ted Porter with my eyes closed - I know him for about 25 years. http://www.beemershop.com/

This does suck.

Did you have the work done by BMW? It should be warranted, small consolation to screwing up your trip.

Yeah, it was done by my dealer in Asheville, but I have put 13,000 miles on it in the last seven weeks. Ride Report

Thanks everyone for all the offers of help. You can click on the Where's Kurt link in my sig line to see if I made it to the dealer tomorrow.

IIRC, Work done at the dealer has a one year (might be more) unlimited milage warranty good at any dealer.

Thanks! I'll certainly check it out tomorrow. That would be great! Anyway, tomorrow will be better than today. I have been in a shithole section of Salinas for four days. Hookers on the street, drug deals going down in front if my motel and there were actual gun shots last night. Salinas seems to be a nice place, but I just picked the wrong area.

If you are less than 2mm of play at the rim, you will likely be fine.

I wish, Jim. It's a more than that. I'm going to have it checked out anyway. My next appointment is May 17 at the Overland Expo so I have time. It's just a money thing. I hope it is covered as a previous poster said.

BTW, I see no oil leaking out of the final drive which I hear is a sign of imminent catastrophic failure, so I feel pretty good about making it to the dealer for a "House" type diagnosis.
