Fay Meyer Parts pissing me off....

I like to support local stores when I can, but the Fay Meyer parts department is pushing their luck...

I try to support FM and buy some of my KTM parts from them, but I think they have pushed me over the edge. Sorry for my rant, I'll try to make it quick:

Fay Meyer's Pros:
  • Local shop.
  • Convenient.
  • Some cool guys in the sales department.
  • Some cool guys in the parts department.

Cons:
  • They seem to stock almost no KTM service parts, and it is getting worse instead of better.
  • They sell parts at about 10% OVER list price, as opposed to online dealers like Munn racing at 25% UNDER list price.
  • Have to pay local tax, although not really FM's fault.
  • ...and FM's latest trick, and the straw that broke the camel's back. They now charge a 'shipping fee' for parts that they add onto their regular KTM stocking order if it is a part they "don't normally stock".

What? We are not talking about a special shipment. We are talking about ordering a part, prepaid, that FM does not have in stock (but should), having it shipped in the same box with the rest of their stocking order, and paying another 'shipping' premium on top of the list price premium and tax premium.
Now a $5 part that they don't stock but should will cost me closer to $10. Ummm, no.

Munn Racing now on speed dial... Even for small parts.

This is the current business model for all shops now. $500,000 in inventory on the floor 2 cents in parts on hand.

Sun up in thornton seems to have everything I call for in stock. It's just the drive up there after work through rush hour from the south side of town that blows.

I dislike FM though, tried to buy a bike there once and never again.

I had great luck with their parts dept. I was trying to find a jet that nobody seemed to have in stock. I called everyone down the Front Range and Fay Meyer was the only shop that had it. I was very specific about what I was looking for since I would be driving down from Fort Collins.

When I got to the parts counter and asked for the jet, a couple of people looked and couldn't find it. "Whoops, the threads on your jet are different than what we have."

I wanted to dump all of their jets on the floor and knock over a few display racks before walking out.

I guess I meant to say that I had a shitty experience with them too.

So, why not hit up Elite KTM? They seem to stock everything and last time I checked...their website is 10% under list and pretty easy to use.

I checked online on Fm.com to find a regulator/rectifier and it showed it IN STOCK -

Ordered it up and requested store pickup - planned out my weekend and got all my electrical connectors picked up ready to do some wiring over the weekend. I expected the call a week later to say - COME PICK IT UP, except I got the call WE DONT HAVE IT IN STOCK......Mother- F

They did order another one that said IN STOCK online but double checked it manually and I got it a WEEK LATER.

BTW Wear your cool DC or Red Bull shirt to get more attention from the staff when you visit.

Great stuff this whole parts business -

Sun is much better for in-stock KTM parts... And really not that far EXCEPT when I-25 becomes a parking lot (which these days seems to 7AM-7PM with the construction they have going on). Elite? Even without traffic, thats a two-hour round trip.

Chip Munn at Munn Racing pretty much always answers the phone himself, actually knows something about the parts, and has great pricing. It previously didn't make much sense to pay him to ship out small parts, but now that FM charges their phantom "shipping" fee as well, I might as well get the price and tax discount and order from Munn.

I always liked Sun. Good people and a solid price. As for Fay, you can always go in and ask for Paul. I'm on the CSC (Colorado Sportbike Club) a lot and he's always on there. He gets shit taken care of. You can say that Sean from the CSC sent ya, but he may or may not remember me personally. Either way, he's good people.

As I said, it's not the 'people' at Sun. I know and like several of them.

It's about management decisions to stock a little and charge a lot.

The real bad part about that is that KTM ships parts to the dealer UPS 2nd day for free.

If that is true for Fay, I wonder what their response would be?

Hate to say it, over the years I have learned to use online sites to order my parts from...one is even a dealer in AZ...but they have their act together. What is with CO shops!!! I've not been impressed. I will say their tire prices are actually normal and not jacked up, I hated that about MI dealers you would get MSRP pricing ($240 for a rear tire for a street bike when you could buy it online for $120)....LOL

Sun never has the parts I need for my Ktms. Elite always seems to have everything in stock. Recent examples where sun failed and elite came through. Head gasket , oil line banjo bolt, seat , clutch cover gasket valve adjuster screws.
Like to shop local , but cant stand the " no , but we can order it " answer to part inquiries. I can order it from munn and get it here faster and cheaper. Elite is a far drive and hard to find the time to get there.

I've had good luck with Apex in the Springs. They stock some KTM parts and what they have to order usually shows up in about 3 -4 days. msrp though.
