rescue mission
ok so heres the deal, 2 beemers in Nirobi need bringing home to UK, owners back in Uk after crash damage, bikes are said to be ok, so taking that as being fit to ride, what suggestions as to route? easist (shortest) looks like Eth, Sudan Egypt find boat or onto Lybia and find boat, or the 'across middle of Africa and uptowards Morroco. any Adv'ers done this sort of route recently, any advice gladly apreciated .

Not meaning to sound negative.. and I´m not really an expert. But I do believe, that you´ll need a carnet to enter Egypt (possibly North Sudan, too).
This document is issued for a certain vehicle and its owner. I have travelled with the carnet, but the bike was in my name. Would it have been possible for somebody else to cross the borders on my bike & carnet, I really don´t know... but I suspect it could become very, very complicated in some faraway countries. Any time the vehicle´s documents do not match with yours 100%, better be prepared for lots of trouble and huge delays. The idea of doing a long overland-journey on somebody else´s bike may not work in practice, unless the owner is in the same group, for example. But I´m not saying it is certainly 100% impossible, if your an experienced traveller and it´s your lucky day... just beware, that it´s not gonna be easy! And across Africa in the middle was more common maybe 20-30 years ago.. these days it is done by very very few, as it is seen as highly problematic, and possibly dangerous. |

Hi Pecha, we realise that their is likley to be a paperwork 'nightmare' we will have of course done as much of that as possible before we set off, its more of whats the 'best' route , also checking out wether they can be fraighted back.

If I were you, I´d do more research on paperwork in this case, because that could be the real show-stopper. Even if freighting a vehicle out of a country, and you´re not the owner, they´re gonna assume, that you´ve stolen the vehicle, so better have some credible authorisation papers from the actual owner.
