You have to remove the stem XR650r (male) of the STEERING STEM and to reduce the diameter of the (landing) for XL600 install the lower bearing. Pay attention to the length of the stem (pin)! I did adapt CRF450 forks on my xr500r. Here is some information: http://home.comcast.net/~ledrocnoc/CRFClampMods/ my photos of the stem before machining: after: |

rear wheel issues
Soooo.. fun stuff. Haven't been able to torque the rear axle nut correctly, but had enough torque on it to make me feel reasonably safe, and have been checking consistantly to make sure it wasn't backing off. When I got the bike, the chain adjustment wasn't equal side to side, and I thought the PO was just being a dork and not maintaining it. Turns out, that wasn't the case at all.
After a short ride yesterday, I went to lube and tighten the chain up by a click, and noticed that again, the right side adjuster had *backed off* on its own. I attribute this to not having the axle nut torqued appropriately. So, here's why I haven't been able to torque it: when I do, the rear wheel binds, and I hadn't figured out how until yesterday when I discovered the rest of this crap. It manages to pinch the brake backing plate up against the outer edge of the hub! ![]() It appears as though there's most of 1/8" of material missing in the inner bearing/collar/spacer/sleeve/oring/circlip/dirtysock/lastweekslunch assembly, but I can't find any indication that I'm actually missing parts, nor is there that much obvious wear on anything I've inspected. I'm getting ready to drop the $150 or so from honda on the entire innards, but first wanted to ask: *what. the. f.*? Has anyone else run into this? Last thing I did before I went to bed was take a random tractor supply sourced flat washer I had laying on the bench, drill it out to 5/8" and then use a burr to open it to the size of the axle itself; then slipped it in between the drum and brake backing plate. I haven't rode the bike on this, it terrifies me a might bit to do so, but it proved my theory. Now I can torque the axle nut to 58ftlbs and have *no rear wheel bind*. The thing is, the washer is stationary against the backing plate, and also sitting against the rotating center of the right side wheel bearing, so I don't think it'd last long before grenading. Maybe I'm wrong and this is fine, but I don't get that gut feeling. Thoughts? Insults? Prayers? Advice? Pictures?

rear wheel issues
jontow,
It sounds like one of your spacers is either the wrong one or worn down badly. Sometimes it is hard to tell wear as the spacer will wear even and flat, usually with some mushrooming around the outside diameter. If the bike ate a wheel bearing in the past it may have ground down a spacer. I suggest going to a parts site like Bike Bandit and look carefully at the schematic to make sure all of the spacers are there and installed right. As to your washer fix, as long as you can torque the axle properly and nothing is binding and the wheel turns free, it should be ok for temporary. It may run a long time like that, but I would fix it right ASAP, if for no better reason than for peace of mind. |

Cool, I have a similar project. I'm starting with a XR650L frame/suspension and grafted a XL600 motor into it. I have been looking for a suitable front end for my project.
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=466264 I have to update the photos (and thread itself), now that we can't just embed on here anymore... -ingo |

Check the plug gap and the condition of the plug, it is not unknown for new plugs to be iffy, especially NGK.

Might have some gunk in the carbs that clogged something up. If you haven't gone through them yet I'd give that a go.
They're not fun to remove however. Another member gave me a good pro tip to lighten the stress of the job and that's to take the airbox screws out so you can shove it back a bit, free up some room. |

I remove all of the engine mount bolts when I'm going
to pull the carbs. It's less aggravation than fighting the carbs.

After Market Electric Starter for XL600L
I have a 1987 XL600L that I love riding but my 63 year old knee won’t let me kick start it any more.
Does anyone know of an aftermarket electric starter that I can adapt/install on the engine? |

xl600r 83 head
Hello there one and all.....calling all folk with bike bits stashed away.
I'm looking for a head for a xl600r 83 as while investigating an oil leak found the source and it is a bodged patch up job of a crack in the head. Do any other heads fit this engine? Cheers |

Have a look at early XR600 heads. I've got one in my garage and I've often wondered if it would fit an XL.
