Replacing an '07 990 Adventure Frame

I was pointed to cheapcycleparts.com who had one listed for $745, which seemed too good to be true. I placed the order and was contacted by them and told that I needed to remove the VIN from my old/damaged frame, send it to them so that they can send it to KTM before a new frame was ordered.

Then, I got a call back from them saying that my frame (6010300110033) was superseded by a new one (6010300120033), and the new price would be $1,350. Huge difference. Guess the deal was too good to be true.

Anyone have any idea of who might stock the old versions of the frame, or where I might be able to pick up a used one?

So all pre 12 frames are invalid and need updating. Buy the frame; tell you're using it for a sculpture. Send new details to KTM, department of transport....

I was told the it's KTM's requirement that they (KTM) receive the VIN cut from the old frame before they can release a new frame with that VIN stamped into it.

Unbelievable, so what if I wanted to build a custom bike, road legal...KTM stealer wouldn’t sell me a frame? What version is your frame, tell um your insurance company won’t pay for an upgraded frame, only like for like.

There is a frame for sale in the flea market. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Comes to think of it, there are a few

I'm not sure about that. It doesn't sound like they would.

The guy at cheapcycleparts.com said that it was KTM's requirements to receive the old VIN before releasing a new frame with the same VIN.

I bought some forks from a really good guy in Austria, so I asked him if this was standard (I wanted to confirm this). He forwarded me an email from Chip Munn (Munn Racing) in which Chip stated:

few weeks on the frame - you have to turn in the old frame and get the existing Vin stamped in the new frame

Thanks.

I have been contacted buy a guy who had an '04 (or was it '06) frame, but I found out that it wasn't really compatible with my bike. I guess my frame has mounts for EFI stuff that the frame I was offered didn't have.

this is correct. I've had to do it for customer bikes. This way you get the same title-able bike & it isn't changed to "salvaged" which can greatly affect a bikes future, both in re-sale value & in insurance premiums or lack of coverage.

if you look at it that way KTM does you a favor, as international border crossings (try coming back into the USA from Canada on a bike nowadays) & small-town cops can be Barney Fife's "Check Point Chickie" when your VIN doesn't match your registration...

Yeah, makes sense. I was understanding about that part. I went down to the shop today to start work on the bike to get it stripped down so that I could cut the VIN from the frame.

I'm just more let down that I had a brand new frame lined up and then was told that I needed the newer model frame at almost twice the cost.

Hey, Rocky: haven't heard from you guys in a while. Are the details of your trip in ride reports or something?

Wish I could do something to help the frame sit.......

Take care...and laters.....

I believe there are a few differences...

but nothing too dramatic. I think the EFI mounting under the headlight is non existent on 2004 frames, also some mountings for throttle suction sensors both sides of the bike. The ONLY important thing would be the curve's details at the place where center stand mounts. There where some problems with harmonic induced cracking down there at the right side of the frame. If you have yours you could compare the way the 990 frame is different down there.
