Our setup was: uni filter (fresh one swapped in at Millers), non vented side panel, edelbrock carb, stock motor, stock header, WB E series slip on As for lights, we've run both the 8in BD halogen and 8in TT HID along with helmet lights off of a rewound stator and carried battery packs for backup. My advice is to get as much light as you can afford, the difference btwn the halogen and the HID is considerable. From the pictures I've seen, the newer Rigid Industries LEDs provide even more light.

OR GO FASTER and you won't need lights !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just run the Trail Tech HID kit on your XR 650 Then put on a BD 8" HID if needed at sometime

First year we had a flat that put us way back on time so lights were a necessity. Second year we got to Top Gun before we needed lights. This year it would be great to do the whole thing in daylight

Hey guys doing a list of parts for XR650r. What gearing is good for this race? Looks like the guys before used a Dunlop 606 rear for baja. Hows this tire work for the Nevada desert? Also what is the closest hotel/casino to the Aliante? They are booked.
Thanks |

Gear pretty hign.. I would run a 42 16 on my Ktm if I do it.. there are lots of long stretches
try a 739 Desert at with a 606 front.. thats what JCR used to mount on their 650's Look near the las vegas speedway... there are a few there and its like 5 miles away .. or the Santa Fe..

![]() +1 on the 739 rear, we also ran the 606 in front and are trying out the MX51 this year as we've moved over to the 450x. The overflow hotel (Santa Fe Station) is nice and the BITD rate is good. I also have at least one extra room reserved at the Aliante that we probably won't end up using, if anyone is interested, ping me as we get closer to August. Right now we don't yet know how many, if any, other folks will be joining us...

How is the cell phone coverage along the support route? Was thinking about having someone at home watching my spot tracker and relaying position updates to my support truck. Would be handy for them to know when I am behind schedule or even worse, already past a pit and they are there waiting for me.

Doug,
Coverage is spotty.. pits are 30-50 miles apart...Casey works it so chasers can do the speed limit or slower and still beat the rider to the pit and get set up.. (except for remote pits) you will not beat your chase rig. The biggest thing ironman riders have to worry about if being able to ride over 12-20 hours straight with out crashing out.. The hwy patrol is ON it during the race so tell your chase guys to take it easy.. if you find you get seperated due to mechanicals there are always always guys pitting others that im sure will help you out, just ride up and ask.. Mike

We've never had problems with cell coverage (thankfully), as we've used the same strategy of having someone @ home watching the SPOT updates and relaying info to us. Don't think the SPOT is totally reliable though as updates can be misleading. If you've followed any tracking updates from previous events, you'll know what I mean.
We also each carried a phone in a secure location in our packs, just in case...
