Very wishful thinking on your part.

Imagine the conversation at Suzuki:
"If we do nothing, will we still make money off the already very small margins from this bike? Yes we will."
and
"If we fix it (and admit that it was a problem to begin with) do we see any significant increase in sales offsetting our costs? No"

Oh well then..

By western standards and values you make a good point. But I think you may fail to fully grasp the Japanese work ethic and moral code. They are not like us.

More likely ... once they know about the problem ... and actually identify it as a real problem ... they would then FIX IT, say nothing and move on. That is: "the Japanese way".

Well they've had what, 14 years? Believe me they know about the "problem". And while they adopted Poke Ayoke over 45 years ago along with most of the Deming manufacturing/management practices I'm pretty sure they've "moved past" the gearset design on a bike long overdue to be updated... 2 cents.

'96 to Present.

Pre '96 is a totally different bike. But they do have their own thread here on Thumpers. Just scroll down till you find it. I know very little about those pre '96 bikes ... very few around it seems. Mostly you find them in Europe in countries that were cut off and never got the post '96 bike.

Learn more at Zen biker site. Lots of good DR650 history and much more.

I got the new gear in September last year from CMSNL.com in The Netherlands and it cost $115EUR. Now the price is 269EUR!

Amazing $119 and $233 for those gears on M R Cycles where I bought a new set of OEM gears for the 96 to 2020 DR for around $65 per gear.
I wonder why they are so dear.

the klr has its own known issues. and the percentage of dr's w/this issue is a fraction of a percent. if you want a bike that is not nearly as nice a ride as a dr, suit yourself...

I'm guessing it is because they won't sell many for the pre 96's. I only changed mine as a preemptive measure due to the bike being poorly maintained. This is the gears after 30000+ k's:

Wouldn't mind getting the new gears and shafts cryo treated before installing them, but I have not come across any recommended shops in AU to do the work.

How are the new gears going from nova

If they need money to push the project through I don't mind donating a few $ if we get enough people to throw $10 in the hat that'll pay for a set of gears that can be tested.

How's about it folks

Does anyone know of any case where the new improved Suzuki 3rd gear desintegrated? If there are any, then a statistic could be made for a 60$ part :) ofc a bike made from titanium would work best for rtw but I could live with changing to the improved gear from suzuki.
