But, with a temp tag, you likely won't get stopped...

That just sounds too easy to be true.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing?
If the Chicago DMV told you that I don't see any reason not to believe them. That is essentially what happened when I bought a used pickup in North Carolina, to get me and my broken bike back home to Oregon. The selling dealer issued me a 30 day temporary cardboard plate gave me the title, and other paperwork, and I drove it across the country to Oregon. I did have to get my Insurance agent to fax proof of insurance papers.

When I bought my RT in New York getting a temp tag was as easy as going to the DMV with the proper paperwork and paying $20 (I think). Rode back to Ca without any issues. I don't recommend using a plate from another bike. If you get stopped it can cause a whole lot of issues depending on the officer's mood.

Thanks again for the input, everyone. I'm actually leaving on Sunday now so I'm just going to roll with the bill of sale, title and proof of insurance..no tags. Hopefully if I do get pulled over the officer will be understanding.

I'll report back here when I get back in case anyone else is in this situation in the future.

I did the same with my purchase and didn't pulled over at all.

i've made my own temp tag that just said
temp tag, vehicle in transit
and put that on the back

i used a printer, cardboard back and clear tape up front.
rode from east coast to colo w/ no issues.
of course i had insurance and paperwork.

in the end it's all about the insurance and theft to the police.
tags are just technicalities and state revenue.
had a cop behind me, then pulled ahead and i waved. no issues.

We picked up a bike in CO mid-April, and are now in MA. No tag, and despite getting a few looks then haven't had any issue. Of course, we do have the title and bill of sale. The bike will be registered when we return to CA in a while. The only issue, per se, was crossing in to Canada where we had to walk them through the fact that CO private party sellers kept the plate.

Don't over think things, just have your paperwork in order and go have fun.
