Excellent summary BobLoblaw, and a huge reason I posted the letter to the editor of BMW ON in the first place.

As Mexico riders we will continue to ride, but a periodic review of our risk management procedures is prudent.

In that light alone, the above is very well stated.

give them the bike

I found many of the comments interesting. Have all these people been into Mexico in the last couple years? Say pass the first check point South of the border? Stop or run a check point? I was in Mexico when the man did that and his wife was shot. Give them the money, the motorcycle and caught a bus home. They would kill themselves trying to ride most of the bike we ride anyway.

Hello fellow motociclist !!!! Yes , its very interesting time in Mexiko. In Ref. to highwaymen/bloqueos/caravans of bad guys.etc. Everyone decides their own travel decisions... I will not encourage someone currently to land travel into mexiko. If someone wants to go its thier decision. But it is very dangerous n Mexiko right now.
I chose to bring up the dangers about the current war / lawlessness in Mexiko..
Thats right i'm like one of the few that post up about the current war/ dangers in Mexico here on this thread.

As i was saying the other day ....

Forgot to mention the first cop that stopped me the other day that I got two warnings first thing he said was "How are you doing ? I answered., doing ruffly., Mas o menos.... Sirrrrrrrrr
In other order ...Last week my brother lost his TUNDRA between TORREON and SAN PEDRO he was coming back from Sierra Mojada were he has a contract with PENOLES a mine on the Coahuila's Desert he is diabetic and told me that when they where pointing the machine guns, his sugar level went way up . He lost the fuck'n truck but they let him and the other two workers that were with him free...He said that the guys that came from behind and were for a while on his blind spot and that he had not realize they were there showing the guns and screaming STOP! When he finally stop., And didn't know what they wanted He thought they wanted him .... He was relief when they just took the truck

Again, those who live here ride here. If we sat around and thought too much about it, we wouldn't even leave our homes.
What didn't make the news in Europe or the USA were the 23 dead between Xalapa and Veracruz two days ago.
The exact same route I will be driving today and riding on Sunday.
By the way, this year's big Rat ride is in the Copper Canyon area:

Chango, give it a rest. You are very unlikely to ever convince me that Mexico is unsafe for motorcycling. Not going to happen. You are way behind the curve with your posts about thugs taking over cities. That happened here 6 years ago and wasn't straightened out until the army came in. SR likely feels the same way I do. There have been impromptu stops and robberies in Mexico since wheeled traffic was invented. There are remote and lawless areas here and it is a country that doesn't suffer fools very well. Even the best get bit, but that is the chance you take in order to ride one of the single most beautiful countries in the world for motorcycling.

23 dead, Chango, the exact same route I'll be on today and on Sunday. Why should I change my plans? Why should I be worried? What I should be and what I will be is "aware". The same awareness I use when I ride out in the sticks where few vehicles pass on the roads each day. You stand a far greater chance of having a medical problem like dehydration or an unfortunate mechanical problem than you do being confronted by criminals. You can say I am lucky so far, and I can say that I make my own luck.

Why would the Rat group plan a ride to that area if they didn't understand the reality of things? What Trice outlined was only the 4th event I have heard of and only the third one actually verified that concerned motorcyclists and foreign ones at that.

Ride aware and use common sense. I sincerely want to know the details of what happened up north, the time and place and numbers. Information like that is important. There is a big difference between the drunks wanting a hand out for more booze type stop and one that sees firearms being used. I've dealt with the former, but not with the latter and until I do and depending on the outcome, I will keep riding here and enjoying things. I don't ride here expecting to be robbed, but I do ride here as "aware" of the local vibe, the surroundings, the phase of the moon, etc... as possible.
That is a good idea for anywhere and not just Mexico.

Mexico? The Desert? Middle of July? 1000 mile / 24hr ride?!

That's so stupid I almost want to do it. Which would be more valuable an aux. fuel tank or an aux. water tank?

Maybe I should ride my Harley and really add some risk to the ride.

I can earn my Sweaty Iron Butt Certificate (suitable for framing)

So I got a PM from a member who posts frequently in this thread, he was responding to one of my last posts....

I thought I'd share these feelings. Again these are my feelings/opinions... and hopefully explain, in a round about way some frustrations I've been dealing with lately.

Quote:
My frustration is that I love Mexico and Central America... but my solo traveling days are over and my wife and two daughters are as adventurous as I and we now travel by 4x4.

Another frustrating point is that we've been traveling and wheeling in Arkansas and Oklahoma now that we're in DFW.... and by golly I've had more spooky/close calls in the fooking Ozarks and Ouachitas than in Mexico.

My point is that I'm in a boggle. Mexico 0 issues. Oklahoma 3 incidents. Arkansas 2 incidents. Granted I've been to Mexico 5 times now, and Arkansas many (20+ times), Oklahoma ~6 trips. I've never felt unsafe in Mexico.

But i've been watching the country get hotter and hotter.... and I'm less and less comfortable with the idea of traveling down there. Plus I'm coming to my senses and being more risk averse now that I'm a father of two.

Another issue I've been pondering... why the fook are our friends and family fighting in the middle east when there is a real, legitimate war being fought to our south, where many innocent people are being hurt and killed. Can't we do like we did in Colombia?
