Tyre recommendations
Hi all, I just brought myself a 950 adventure and looking to buy some new tyres for it.
What does everybody think is a good choice for dual purpose with the emphasis on the best in dirt.... Been looking at the Metzeler Karoo (T) and it looks good, what ya's think???? [IMG] [/IMG]Cheers, Bill.. |

Dont waste your money - you will be lucky to get 2k out of them there absolute rubbish. The best tyre for the 9*0 is a Mefo Super Explorer rear. Check out Orange Crush, plenty of info there.

Heidendau K60. Currently 19,000k out of the front and last rear was just under 10,000k. Still had tread but changed it anyway.

Cheap, readily available, More that 6000km+ from the front, 4000km+ from rear (depending on your enthusiasm).
Good performance on the slab for a dot knobbie. This is based on usage on a dr650. 950 would be similar weight but more grunt? You can run something more of a compromise like the k60 or mitas e07 rear for long legs between Tyre shops. I wouldn't compromise too much on the front end though, for your stated use. There are plenty of options out ther though.

I just fitted one to my Husky TE610 (a lot less weight and less power than the KTM) and after 3000K's its absolutely stuffed. What a waste of money

If your preference really is best in dirt then try the Karoo yourself. I'd rather ride technical dirt with a Karoo on a big ktm than any other big knobbie, at least for the first 2 days....
Mitas do a big knobbie ++++EDIT- it was a tkc 80 that I didn't like bald++++, very much like a worn 908- it just spins and skips over rocks rather than digging in. Nb this is coming from the person who has to ride other people's bikes up hills, not the person who pays for the tyres....... Dr AT screwed with this post 06-01-2012 at 02:07 AM |

However they have a slightly new shape for the front Im told and cuts the noise. As for in the wet, tar wise seems ok. Although my moto is "when wet, dont ride to regret". In the mud. What tyre isnt crap in the mud.

I agree wth Troy It would appear SSDD
Its simple IMHO Drive tyre Dunlop 908 Rally Raid, Steer tyre HP4 Michelin if you can get them. I have had some success with 952 Dunlops on the front. The application of pressure by the right hand/right foot is in direct proportion to the length of tyre life. If you are really worried about tyres lasting a long time sell your KTM and buy a postie FFS. Then again if you make a poor tyre choice it doesnt really matter, said big pig KTM will happily eat it up very quickly then you can try again. I guess tyre choice is like bike choice. If you want to play with the big boys get used to buying tyres, Buy the wrong ones or try and save money well then you might just buy more. Either way your local Bike shop or local Tyre shop will reckon you are a good bloke. xrxtz screwed with this post 05-31-2012 at 01:18 PM |

Hey Billy, talk to PBee, his handles nicely but I can't remember what his tyre combination is.
I like MT21's, so there's one on the back of the Tenere at the moment but the front is problematic. The trail tyre on the front is not cutting it and I was going to go for a Mitas E09 Dakar but I hate those yellow stripes in them. Found a Metzeler Unicross which took my fancy, but it's not available over here so I've gone for a Dunlop 908RR to try and get some grip back in the front. The vast majority of my kms are on dirt or gravel so I'm willing to lose some bitumen grip in a trade off for stability off road. What I have found is that variations in riding style, skill, tyre pressures and terrain make for interesting conversations about tyres.
