so I drove my rig into Parked car today
So I drove my rig into Parked car today on my own street of all places. Came around a corner a little hot hack wheel hit a pothole hack came up grabbed a bunch of brake and slid right into the damn thing. I do have full coverage and agreed value. But have never had to file a motorcycle claim and on top of that not on a bike that is most likely blue booked at $400 bucks. Not sure how this is going to pan out. Tweeked the forks / tripples, bars headlight and the mounts for the hack. Anyone had the pleasure of deling with this kind of situation?

How much damage to the car? Can you pay for it yourself?

I could pay for the damage myself but that's why I have insurance.+ The van I smacked into was a brand new 2012 Sprinter when I say new I mean brand new guy was not happy. This would be my first claim with progressive ever.

Sorry to hear the news RF, but glad you are OK.
Never filed with Progressive before, but have heard good things. I'd like to know how they treat you with the sidecar addition to the policy. Have any pics of the carnage to the cager or the rig?

Progressive really had a hard time wrapping their head around why I had the bike insured for 7k agreed value at first. After the adjuster came out he told me to have it appraised and bump the policy up. We came up with $2400 in damage to the bike including my labor to fix it at $80 an hour new fork tubes , headlight, triples ect and re-align the sidecar. Figure now was as good a time as any to send a set of triples to Brock at Side Effects to have the steer right modification done. So now I'm just waiting for them to get back from Canada.

The steer-rite mod took most of the low speed head shake out of my KLR/Enduro rig. It's a fairly light rig so I really didn't need the mod to help with heavy steering. Post up how it goes with progressive as that is who I have and (knock on wood) have yet to file a claim.

Progressive actually did very well he gave me the option of hauling it up to Cluade's or fixing it myself. I wrote up a very conservative estimate and just replaced what had to be replaced. And so far it has been smooth I had an agreed value policy on the bike for 7k. This was my estimated parts value while I was building it, I figured if the house burned down that would cover it. Now that it is finished I need to have it appraised and up the agreed value. If I had smashed sidecar and just totaled sidecar/subframe and not touched the bike I could have lost the bike due to a total loss situation. 3k for the side car, + subframe and install would have been more than 60% of the total value.
More good news my triples came in today after I get done dealing with all the storm damage to the house. Luckily That will be through a different insurance company. |

Was the car parked legally? In my state, you can't park within 50 feet of a stop sign. Yet, people do it all the time. Was the car facing the direction of travel for the side of the road it was on??? Sometimes it doesn't matter if the vehicle was moving or not. If it was in an unsafe or unlawful situation, the owner could be liable. Honestly, if it was my neighbor, I would just pay for the repairs outright, but if it was some asshat, you might have other options... |
