2005 Tiger 955i or 2001 F650GS
Just sold a couple of my project bikes and have money burning a hole in my pocket. Looking to add another dual sport to the arsenal and found the following two bikes:
2005 Triumph Tiger 955i with side and top cases. New tires. Approx 25000 miles 2001 BMW F650GS (the thumper) with full system cases. ABS. Approx 22000 miles Not sure which way to go. Both appear to be in great shape. Will principally be a ride for my sons to travel in the local area. We really don't do any offroading other than some gravel. Or should I wait and get 2 KLRs? Two great bikes at hand, for sure.
Speaking as a 2009 KLR owner, the little GS650 has always been intriguing, fuel injection, 60 miles per gallon, and its more like the KLR than the Tiger is going to be. The GS supposed to "feel more stable" on gravel than the KLR, there was a great comparision study written in last month's Rider Magazine. But, the Tiger a great bike too, but a bit of a beast in comparison, no? I have the KLR but crave a trip-bike with a twin someday. Will always keep the KLR though. "The KLR, however, is like the perfect taco:
When you want something cheap, hearty and satisfying, nothing else will do".

test ride the 955 tiger first. I have a couple friends who own one and love everything about it other than the wind turbulance. They've both tried a couple different wind screen options with very little luck.

Some of the single spark F650s have the surging issue. But I imagine that is sorted by now. I dunno, if I already had a KLR I'd get the Tiger. If I was planning on getting rid of the KLR, maybe the F650. But the Tiger is a bit more unusual so that appeals to me. F650s are everywhere, albeit because they are a great bike, bit a little too common.

I have owned plenty of motorcycles since 1987, but there's only one I ever regretted selling...
my 2005 Triumph Tiger 955i ![]() ![]() ![]() It did everything well, and sounded amazing with the Triumph off-road can (TOR). Regarding turbulence... keep the stock screen or the factory tall screen and you're golden! I'm sure the F650 is "nice", but there's no comparison to the Tiger.
