Planning: 2-Up Ride to MotoGP Laguna Seca on a Daytona 675
Hello everyone, I'm Anthony - a long time lurker and a first time poster.
At the end of July my girlfriend (Sam) and I are planning to ride 2-up from Orange County to Monterey for the MotoGP races. This is her first time doing any sort of long distance riding, so we decided to break up the 800 mile round-trip into 4 easy days.
Here is our planned route up to Laguna Seca. Our "halfway" mark will be the San Luis Obispo area.
The sport "touring" bike:
I just wanted to ask for a few recommendations from you guys.
1) Camping: does anyone know of some good camping sites around San Luis Obispo/Pismo Beach area?
2) Tent and sleeping bags: we don't have these yet. We obviously need them to be small enough to pack onto the bike. Sam will be wearing a backpack containing the lightweight items, so the saddlebags and tank bag will be mostly free. Any good recommendations for folks on a budget? Is this even realistic?
3) Route: is there anything that you would recommend seeing on the way? What about any route alternatives? We are perfectly fine taking the same route back down, but it would be nice to have a little bit of variety thrown in.
4) Advice: any general tips or criticisms about what you see? I've done this ride a couple of times before, but never with a passenger. We definitely want to do this the right way and the safe way, so we are all ears for any advice you might have.
Anyway, thanks a ton for reading! This is probably the coolest forum on the internet and I hope to become an active member here. We will definitely be posting a bunch of photos and a write-up of our mini adventure when we return.

[QUOTE=noqmansan;18966052]Hello everyone, I'm Anthony - a long time lurker and a first time poster.
Hi!!! well you sure look good together!!! we are also doing the same trip so here is what I can say.
Camping... that will put a lot of stress on you how ever your days will be only 200 miles so carring the gear won't be too much, it is all dependent on how you put it on the bike, not on Sam.
The other part about this, you mention "on a budget" if you go small you will go expensive, unless you buy 2nd hand. The best sleeping bags, the ones that compress to very small (that you need) will cost you more than the bigger-heavyer type from walmart. So go to a sports place and see what they have and how small they can be (and warm) I am not a person that knows how a 5x3x10 in bag looks out of just an internet pic, so i have to go and see it in person.
The tent must be small but capable of putting both of you in it, and it will not have a lot of space, try the hikers edition. Also do you want to do this several times a year or several times? IF the answer is NO, or MAYBE, then just hotel it! and forget about the bulk and by the time you have pay for all of the best gear then it will cost more than the hotels (or close to ir)
The route looks cool and that is what I want to take, maybe look up the big tree you can go true that is of 101 somewhere, other wise I would stay on hwy 1 and also on the cost it will be a lot less hot. Last year it was over 100 F on the I-5 sections we did and on the cost it was around upper 60's.
If you have to return faster take the 101 fill with cars but less trucks than I-5
The extra advice, go to Solvang, it is a nice Danish town for some great breakfast or lunch or for you an over night! I would like to take my wife there it is very NOT USA and very European feeling and just a little of your route.
Sunblock! yesterday we spend 1-2 hours in the sun without it and today my face hurts, my arms are red like lobster and they hurt, why? I had no sunblock and no HAT and short sleeves, a friend had an accident and we had to wait for the truck like about an hour maybe 2 in direct sunlight. Take your sunblock and maybe some 1-2 liters of water in the tank bag just to be safe.
Stop as many times and SHE wants and need. Water up, and WC breaks after that.
If I think of anything else I will let you know, or just ask me! We are going on Wednesday and taking 2 days to get up there.

I am a minimalist and travel light. You will become one too if you keep camping two up on a Daytona.
The soft bags work fine but don't hold much. I travel with the same. Damasovi is right. You need small sleeping bags, pads and tent if you hope to fit everything in your limited space. One idea would be to ditch the camping gear expense and use the money to stay in cheap motels. That way you don't need no steenkin' luggage. Just have to pack a toothbrush and a credit card and buy clean clothes and throw the dirty ones away. Just kidding.
You strike me as a determined young man on a mission to camp. Which means checking out craigslist.org
You can find nice down bags on Craigslist for 50 bucks or so that will pack down to nothing with a compression bag. Checking my favorite place to shop comes up with items like this in Orange county:
You need the smallest packing sleeping pads known to man which would be the Thermarest Prolite. You can fit two sleeping bags compressed to the size of a small cantalope and two prolite pads in one side bag. For shelter I would suggest a tarptent like this fellow has:
Probably your cheapest shelter option.
You will need some sort of pad for Sam to sit on since she will be riding on the uncomfy soft luggage straps (if you want to be on speaking terms after this trip).
No room for excess clothing means one set of outer clothes plus riding gear that you wear so you only have to pack a spare pair of socks underwear and maybe a spare tee shirt. At least that is what I would do. You don't have room for much else.
There's a state park on the ocean at Morro Bay just after you hit Highway 1. Or you could stealth camp further north.
Looks like a fun trip. Look forward to reading your travel stories.

+1 on Solvang. Not only is it a favorite stop with my wife, but they also have a really cool vintage motorcycle museum and an interesting store under the windmill that has Danish cheese and snacks for camping.
Firestone Brewery in San Louis Obispo is also good.
There have been lots of reports that Hwy 1 is particularly clogged with traffic this year, so be prepared to do much of it in the first three gears.
Camping on a budget with so little storage will be tough, but you may not have a choice in Monterey. Most rooms are booked by now, but you can probably still get a Fox Hill camping pass at the track. Focus on warmth. When the fog rolls in at night over Laguna Seca, it can get colder than you might expect. A down sleeping bag and a good set of thermal long johns and socks should do it. I froze my butt when I tried to scale down to one of those Walmart fleece sleeping "bags". I'll be bringing a real sleeping bag this year.
Edit: Just realized this trip already happened; 2012 MotoGP. I guess it worked out just fine.
