Thanks for all the heartening replies, guys.

I have no idea why, but surprisingly, I wasn't too upset afterward. I was thinking that I should be really angry, etc., but wasn't. Mostly I was just relieved and thankful that everything turned out alright.

same situation

I had EXACTLY the same situation last summer, leaving the Grand Canyon at night, heading south. Slower though, around 45mph. I got through that, was thanking my lucky stars, stopped, looked back and the asshat AND the guy he passed were stopped. Man was I tempted to turn around and have a word. Then I realized it was pitch dark, the guy was fool enough to play chicken, maybe he had a gun, etc. etc. I got on my way and in another hundred yards, a bunch of Elk were right on the edge of the road! I travelled at 35mph for the rest of the 60 mile trip!

Maybe it's a Arizona thing. I had a similar experience on Highway 90 north of Huachuca City in 1971, when it was all 2-lane. Riding north I met a guy in a brown mid-60's Chevy pickup passing a line of traffic. It was broad daylight and I was right in the middle of the lane but he kept coming. I went toward the shoulder but that area had a curb and it was impossible to get over it going 65. Even if I could have left the road there was a considerable drop off with large rocks.

The lanes were wide enough that there would have been plenty of room but he moved over right next to the curb so I had no choice other than to ride between the oncoming vehicles. As soon as I could pull over I stopped and thought about following him. Figured he probably had a gun in the car so that would not be a good idea. Had a brief fantasy of passing him and pitching a big rock through his windshield but realized that would put me totally in the wrong. Don't think I will ever forget that day.

Damn.

I can't imagine the adrenaline rush.

At Deals Gap (coincidentally the day I decided to quit going there) I had a guy

on a TL1000 traveling in the opposite direction pass me on my right. Fortunately

I could see he was having issues well in advance so I was already slowing as he

approached a downhill right hander. He ran so wide he had to fight to stay out

of the ditch so I went to the centerline and missed him by a couple feet.

The first few seconds after I was all calm and cool. Two corners later the

adrenaline hit and I thought I would crap my pants. This was in broad daylight

with a clear view of what was going down.

I think my heart would explode in a situation like yours. Glad you're still here.

I sometimes wonder what I would do in that situation. Threading the needle seems to me that it would actually have the higher probability for survival, if the two vehicles are truly side by side.

That said, that had to be crazy.

no choice

There's nothing to do in that situation but to go for it. Cant' stop; can't pull over anywhere; there is only one possibility, thread the needle. I guess there is another choice, panic and let go of the bars! But that is no real option!

Well, thankfully, haven't had that experience yet....and never hope to. But living in AZ, to the poster who mentioned guns, yep, I think most AZ residents carry guns, I know I do. Not necessarily on the bike, but a lot of the time. Number two: No offense meant to Native Americans, but anytime I ride on or near a reservation, I'm on super high alert. And, I never ride around there after dark! There are just too many Native Americans who drink way too much....any time of the day! And, in fairness a lot who don't drink at all, but they're mostly the older more traditional people.....many of whom are just wonderful if you can get to know them. Yes, AZ has a lot of "issues" you don't find in some other states.......I won't even begin to talk about the human/drug/gun trafficking that our president is doing so much to combat. Damn, don't get me started!

The key to this situation is not to get into it. Be aware of traffic in the oncoming lane, is some guy going slow and drivers are getting so fed-up they'll do anything to get past? Or is some fool closing at a rapid rate and you just know he will go around? You are one lucky dog, I believe I'd have laid 'er down.
