Yep. We were under a yellow cell for quite a while which indicates good rains. Unfortunately, very little of it actually hit the ground. I was hoping the fire got more than we did, it's just been so dry and hot the rain was evaporating in the atmosphere.

Estimated containment date has been bumped up to this Sunday, July 1st. Sweet, I guess the rains helped!

FYI -

Buckhorn from Stove Prairie is closed to all traffic. . . will be in immediate futre too.

Rist is closed to all non-resident - homeowner/landowners only.

Just thought I'd post up for the looky-lou's or those hoping for a ride/drive up there.

Thanks Man. Let us know if you hear of Buckhorn opening. We still need to get up and clear Donner.

Lacking anyplace else to ride, we did Swamp Creek & Killpecker again. Very pleasant when you don't have to stop every 1-5 minutes to cut out trees.

I drove back on highway 14. It opened up today. Pretty scorched, but not as bad as I thought it might be. The areas that burned very hot are going to be a big problem in the next big rain. They are just dirt & ash.

Didn't get the memo...

Can a guy get a head's-up once in a while?

I went up 14 as well. Rode around up there west of Red Feather.

Pingree and Stove Prairie were closed on my way up but open on the way down.

I took Stove Prairie and Rist Canyon down. Certainly some scorched areas but not near the widespread devastation many people would believe. The fire appeared to burn fast in the underbrush and there are a lot of green trees, and even beetle kill still standing. A couple of rains and you will have to look hard to see remains of the fire. A few slopes and a lot of ridge tops burned hot and hard. Will be interesting to see further inside the burn area like over by White Pine etc.

I'm off until Tue, so won't know more until then. I'd love to get up there for clearing with you all - next wknd I'm riding out of town - they may let people into the trail systems by next wknd.
Thanks for the work on Swamp/killpecker!!

Looking forward to seeing White Pines/Pendegrass/OFR myself. . . .

I would be surprised if they opened the gates on OFR before hunting season.

Here's a good site for specific USFS trail information.

  • Public safety from hot-spots that won't be put out until first snow.
  • Interference with mop-up & mitigation crews.
  • Issues with trees & rocks that might be falling.
  • Flooding hazard & road damage if a big rain were to happen.

Many good reasons. Many reasons that are driven by the LCD of the general public.

I'm sure you're right. I just wish people would realize it's the forest not McDonald's play place or the county park. If I going to the forest i'll worry about my own safety thank you.

Agreed.

BTW, LCD = Lowest Common Denominator. Anyone on this forum is obviously in the upper 1% of the intelligence & common sense distribution. Assuming a normal distribution, 50% of the population is below average intelligence & common sense.

I haven't driven up through Rist/Stove Prairie yet, and I'm not sure when I will.
I guess I want the residents there to have their time to absorb and grieve and grasp. For right now, I simply look at the images that residents there have been posting up on other forums.

One image in particular has stood out to me. Ray and Annie have friends up in Rist who lost their dream home. They themselves were ok, they were evacuated in time, but had to leave everything behind. Their home was completely destroyed, one of their out buildings as well as their garden was completely intact. But basically they lost everything. Life is more than just material posessions, yet we all have material posessions and we all cherish them to varying degrees. The picture below of Ray and Annie's friend Jim saying goodbye to his vintage BMW says a lot. Enjoy the pic. Stare at it for an hour like I did, and share it. I believe I've secured permission from the right people to be sharing the photo. It's a beautiful and painful reminder of what gets lost in a fire. This man looks to me like he lost a dear friend. He lost memeories past and memories that were yet to be formed.

Holy shit, that is Jim and his bike?! I used to work at BMW of Denver with him in 2005. I stopped in to BMW on Saturday. I talked to Ray and Bob, salesman there who I also worked with. They told me he lost everything but I didn't know that pic was him
