most of the turkey's I know are in cages, glad you didn't run into on of them

2 or 3 years ago, a local rider hit (was hit) by a turkey. Flew up from the side of the road. Riders estimated speed was 45 to 50 mph. Hit him in the upper body, took him off the back of the bike and killed him. Wearing a jacket and a helmet but not ATGAT. Never heard if it was the impact with the bird or going off the bike that did him in...
Hitting anything that big at any kind of speed is gonna be ugly.

I saw numerous wild turkeys riding in the Smokies - particularly the BRP North of Asheville. They were always running up the sides of the roadway - sometimes up steep embankments at impressive speed - serious drumsticks on those things.

They run as fast as 20 MPH and fly up to 55MPH, they are at the fast end of the level flight list...

Hawks in Ontario
Few years back, I was riding in Ontario with my dad. On gravel going about 60mph, my dad was in the lead and to the left. A hawk was flying saw him and banked hard left, straight toward my chest. I lifted my left arm and twisted my body, the hawk brushed up against my chest and raised left arm.... No harm no foul to either of us, I am really glad it was a hawk and not a turkey... Hawks are much more agile flyers.... But man, those talons looked sharp!

My ex- is an ICU nurse. She had a dood that had hit a turkey on his Hardley. Darn near broke every bone in his face.
...but the worst part was when his wife met his GF in the hospital! M

24 pounds or 11 kg would be tops for an old tom turkey. I am thinking your fellow is far more. Betch he cannot fly though! Our turkeys don't fly far but can come up fast, either from the ground or low roosting branches in trees, usually just about helmet height. Quote:

D'oh! Watch those game birds...
A turkey smack could truly be down right fatal, as some have learned.
An old friend was riding back roads on an old Honda 750, wearing a full face helmet. A bob-white quail burst up off the side of the road, hitting him full in the forehead. He said his eyesight went black, but he was conscious enough to maintain balance and brake slowly until stopped. He kickstanded the bike and stumbled to the side of the road where his vision slowly returned. Said he had a nasty headache for a while.

I had a sparrow hawk diving at a bird, hit my quarter faring and slid up, caught me just at the top of the face shield. Knokced me back, I bounced off the passenger section of the seat and the tail section, when I pulled my self back up right I was on the shoulder still running about 70. Grabbed the bars, got straight and then pulled over. Some guy in the car behind me stopped to see if I was OK, had the hawk carcass in the grill of his car. It took me about 30 minutes to quit shaking from the adrenalin rush.

Riding the DRZ about 20mph on a logging road near my place in Orygun had a flock of about 8 suddenly go airborne right over me. Ducked down and just missed colliding with a big Tom.
Did you know they vent their cloaca (bowels) when they take off....  Fortunately had my full coverage helmet on with the visor down. Had to hose off about 5#'s of turkey shit off my gear and bike when I got home...

One of the Techs at the local Harley shop was test riding a new bike he had just finished the set up on.Turkey flew up from the side of the road and hit him in the chest and knocked him off the bike.The owner of the shop had the bird stuffed and now it hangs on the wall over the guys toolbox

Turkey vulture in the baha
Had an incident last november in the southern part of baja. i joined a group from california heading down and on the way back we some how scared a bunch of the turkey vultures up. i was second in line and all of a sudden we were dodging about a dozen of them! One just scrapped the helmet of the person in front of me and did a nose dive right into my windshield on my strom snapping it in 2! it went flying like a Frisbee into the riders behind me and the turkey vulture ended splattered all over my helmet! It was terrifying. Though i was going down for sure! A sore neck for awhile.. but that was probably caused by riding from southern baja to northern cali on a strom with no windshield!
