Dinner Among the Demigods
I got an email this morning from my good pal Max, who is spending some time with his wife and daughter in Rome.
Max is the maniac behind www.maxmatic.com
, which has some great photos of scooters from every corner of the earth.
Here's what he had to say:
greetings to you. Here's a scooter slice-of-life message to you....
I rode my 50cc Honda Sky (a scooter which, despite its modest engine,
and seven years of age is proving to be a great friend in the city of
Rome... still only 550 km on the clock *in all*, electric start,
hydraulic front disc brakes, oil injection, nice helmet box, good
electrics and zippy twist-n-go automagic transmission... and narrow, a
must for the conventions of traffic here) out to the edge of the city
to the monthly meeting of the Vespa Club of Rome.
Long trip, dark, rainy, horrible traffic (for people in cars), and I didn't know my
way, but it worked out just fine. I noticed a distinct absence, a
thorough dearth, of any other two-wheelers at the restaurant. I think
I was the only one to scoot to the meeting. (That's probably good,
'cuz some of those guys really got into the limoncello...)
Anyway, they were as nice and as welcoming as they could be. Every
time a new club member came by, the president would proudly introduce
me, "here is Max, a Vespisto from Boston in America!" I was impressed
that just about all of the bigwigs are retired, and that I was about
the youngest there. (There was one son and one granddaughter there who
were younger, but that's about it.) It was really nice. They gave me a
club sticker, and told me about a swap meet tomorrow (Sun) ont on the
Appian Way, a big "auto jumble" but with a good scooter presence,
including a tent of the Vespa Club.
I also learned that Eurovespa is in Turin this June (16-18) (a short
trip and Alison and Nat are already comitted), and that I missed Imola
(it was in Sept.)
And, of all things, the Lambretta Club of Rome meets at the same
restaurant on the 2ND Thursday of each month! I'll see if I can swing
that, though we're back in language school this coming week and it's
tiring and time consuming, however delightful. (Alison and I are
surrounded by beautiful young people, though they seem to like to stay
out late and aren't as conscientious about their homework as we are
Well, I thought I'd better report on that. If it's not POURING rain
again tomorrow, I'll get out to the horse track for the swap meet, and
of course I'll report on that, too!
Best to you two wonderful afficianadoes,
your man in Rome,
