Hard wiring GPS power supply to battery
I just bought a garmin 4 pin power supply cable for my gpsmap 76csx. The cable has 4 wires. Red- pos, black-ground, brown-data out, white-data in. My question....where do I attach the brown and white wires? Do I join them to the power supply or tie them in somewhere else? This is on my 95 R100GSPD
Thanks for helping. Brent

Don't attach them to anything. If the wire already has stripped ends, cut off the wire back to the insulation so it won't short on anything. It probably won't harm anything if they do short to ground, power, or each other; but it's assumed that they will be unconnected unless you're using the data functions.

Yeah I'm with Luke on this one just cut the data wires short or seal them up some how.

FYI.... The new generation of Garmin that uses mini USB into the GPS has to have a Garmin cable ($50) for ship's power. The new generation cable grounds one of the data leads... if it's not grounded the GPS goes into "computer" mode. In other words all you get is an image that says "computer"... it does not light up. When in computer mode, the GPS is accessed on your computer through Garmin's Basecamp software.
I suppose you could cut the little USB plug and solder a wire to (I think it's pin 4) and ground it... I looked at it and decided to pass... it's tiny. |

Thanks guys
Mine was an older one and just required power and 1 ground. Works like a charm.
