Best soft panniers for dirt touring

what is the consensus on the best soft panniers and rack combo for outback offroad adventure riding? I will need to take food and drink, all my spares and camping gear so will need to be a reasonable size. Also water resistance is important. They will be going on a KTM 625.

check out the giant loop products, there are a few different sizes. i have used the bags for a couple of years now, they stand up well survived a few crashes and still look as good as new.

+1. I have the Giant Loop Great Basin and have been pretty happy with it. Unfortunately I don't have experience with alternatives (pretty new to riding) so I can't give a comparison.

I use Dirt Bagz soft panniers on my KTM 640e. They're very durable and have held up well over the years. However, they're not waterproof so I pack my gear in large zip lock bags. Here's a link http://www.dbzproducts.com/

I have been using Dirtbagz on my 640 Adventure for several years now, and really like them!

They also provide excellent customer service.

Ortleib and Wolfman are going to be your only truly "waterproof" options. I have the Giant Loop Coyote and would go with the Wolfman Rolie system now.

I had Wolfman Expedition on my WR250 for a trip and I hated how fiddly and terrible the mounting system is. Yes, it's stable, but it takes forever to get on the bike, has about a gazillion straps going all places, which get wet and dirty and grimy, then don't work properly ...

I'd never buy this system again. Instead I'd get a Giant Loop System or just use my Ortlieb Rackpack and pack roll.

This is probably a dumb question, & I hope I'm asking it in the right place, but are there any soft pannier options that are lockable? I was going to set up with Metal Mule hard panniers, but after trolling these forums I'm now thinking that I might be better off with a soft set up. My only real concern is security (yeah, I realise that all some thieving maggot would need is a knife to gain access, but it might ward off the casual opportunist). A lot of my touring will probably be solo, and I can see times where I'd have to leave the bike unattended.

The new bags being offered on AdventureSpec.com called the Magadan panniers are supposed waterproof and lockable. They boast quite a few nice features not offered by the others (add Enduristan to the list of waterproof softbags, if you haven't got them on your radar yet).

Downside? Check out the price. If I type it, I am scared I'll get a nose bleed or worse.

Personally, for bang for the buck, I would get the Ortliebs and a set of Pacsafe wire mesh locks.

I think those are the panniers designed by adv inmate Colbatch.. he certainly has the real world experience to back up the product.

Just don't forget to put the dash in adventure-spec.com

In addition to those already mentioned, Kriega makes a nice, totally waterproof system similar to Wolfman's Rollie. There's a vendor thread and maybe ADVRider discounts for GL, Wolfman, & Kriega.

Happy Trails makes a set of soft bags called "Mojave" that attached with a backplate to their racks.
