"time/effort" are the key words. I frequent ADVrider throughout the day but When I am not riding or working on my bikes I am doing work to help people buy one. I start at about 5 am and continue to about 11pm. I rarely have down time. So when I stop in here it is "short quips and funny symbols" for the most part as there are people needing assistance with their purchase.

I just worked out a deal with an exchange student from Japan moments ago. He traded in his C3 Yamaha scooter for a XL883N Iron Sporty.

Y'all may be on to something here. Riding along today and a fucking dog ran out in front of me, I used what I learned here, closed my eyes and nailed the throttle and let the smooth awesome power of my KLR at 40 mph in 5th gear get me away from the danger. Opened my eyes and the dog was behind me so I know it works.

My advice, when the shit hits, close both eyes and nail the gas...

Gonna start teaching a class on it.

Gonna start teaching a class on it.

It is usually my experience that when I go to twist the KLR throttle I am already at the max.

There has got to be a term for the feeling when all your expectations just die - when you realize you have been riding at max throttle all the way down that hill and now you want more to go up the hill and around that truck and that is all she's got!

Yuup. That's the problem they just aren't making the bikes fast enough. If they just came out with a 0-100 mph in 1/10 of a second we would all be safe!

What you mean, I went from 40 to 44 mph faster than I could type this reply with my two fingers.

Of course on a loaded KLR it would take a 1/4 mile to get slowed down.

Don't try that with the Blue Milk Crate... You must have been sporting the Yellow one.

It was going in to speed wobbles at 45 so I just jerked my ass up tight, closed my eyes tighter and accelerated out of it to 55 then slowed back to a more sane speed after the danger had passed.

What a thread!

FWIW, I've witnessed a few fender benders and a couple of multi-car piles. The thing is, cars CAN fly!
They get hit, even at low speeds, and they bounce into the air in unpredictable heights and directions. I saw Chevy Malibu get clipped in the rear quarter by a car doing maybe 30mph. The Malibu went a couple of feet in the air, spinning. The only thing that stopped it from doing more than a 720 rotation was a steel light pole. I also came upon a six car mash up just after it happened... (backroad at train crossing)... cars were in the ditches on both sides, on top of each other... That one made me think... how in the hell could I have saved myself had I been stopped for the train while on my bike?

My point? When the SHTF all you can do is make a decision NOW and go for it, you can't predict/see/contrrol/react to all of it. You do what you can and adjust tactics as necessary.

I'm in the "gas it" camp for the most part. My forward view is much better than my rearward view. I'll take a chance on hitting someone's yard or field at speed rather than outbrake the dually 4x4 behind me. But sometimes hard braking is the only way.

I'm surprised this thread is still alive. Since it is I feel like I should follow up. I've decided not to quit riding. In fact, my grandmother passed on Monday night and I am taking the bike for 6 days up to Montana for her funeral.

I have been really evaluating my riding and here is my conclusion:

I rode 4 years and 40k miles without a near miss. That instilled a very unreasonable sense of safety and security that influenced my riding style and choices. Over the last week I have slowed down, been more cautious when in traffic. I feel much more aware of potential bad situations and as a result take less chances. I think in the end, the near miss was a great eye opener.

Ride safe and carry on with the banter. Cheers
