Bang and Strange Noises during Starting
Usually my bike starts fine. But occasionally I get bangs and knocks and sometimes other unusual noises during starting. It does not sound right, like something is hitting something in the engine, maybe a gear or something. The kind of knock that you get when downshifting at a stop is the closest thing it reminds me of. Happens maybe one time in twenty.
Anybody else notice this? Should I be worried? I don't seem to recall this when I got the bike. Got about 18,000 km. |

Mine has about 20,000 miles at the moment. I never hear this noise. I would take it in asap if you're still under warranty. If not, I'd probably ignore it and hope it went away.

I never had the starter out in my F800GS, but based upon what you've written, I'd be checking whether the starter is engaging properly. If the bike is under warranty, shift the burden onto BMW for the expensive diagnosis and repair.
Let us know what it was. Still, it would be cool to ignore it and see where it leads. Imagine the noise getting louder and louder until one day, in the wilderness, BANG! And then...silence. Fred |

Mine has almost 42K miles and I have never heard a banging noise. Get it checked out at the dealer.

I hope the bang is not from your gun
While you take a man's bike and the noise you hear is someone screaming at you after you start it and ride away I hope this is not the reason

Just an update in case anyone else comes across this problem... the dealer diagnosed that it was the cam chain tensioner. Just got it replaced.

It is back intermittently- definitely the cam chain tensioner. Loosens off and the cam chain slaps and bangs during the occasional start. Nobody else has had problems and resolved satisfactorily? Will have to go back to the dealer. Hope it is not something in the cylinder head that has worn so that a new tensioner will not work 100 percent of the time.

Also, I think that Joel said a tool/gauge existed that could be inserted into the bore in the cylinder head where the camchain tensioner assembly usually sits, that could give a readout on how much wear was present in the system ... I would ask service manager if they have this tool ...
