Quick question about Hannigan: what is the difference between the SS and ST fairings ("Sport" and "Touring")? The specs at the Hannigan website suggest a difference in weight and in storage capacity but doesn't say (or show) what the difference is. I do see that different Lowers and Windshields are available.

The ST is taller and wider. This one belongs to an ABC member here in ABQ.



Another shot of mine for comparison.



It's subtle, but you can see where the lower part covers the tank emblem on the black fairing bike. The ST windshield is also larger.

I think some later fairings adapted the factory RT lowers, but I could be mistaken. I have lowers for mine but have not mounted them. Someone crudely cut out ovals for the valve covers to stick though, they need a bit of help.

Good, that is what it looked like from the few snapshots I've seen. The difference seems to be very subtle-- one is not much larger or smaller than the other. You have the Sport SS, and you appear to have your bike well set-up for travelling. Do you feel that the SS would be adequate for 500-mile/day Transcontinental riding (as well as shorter "regional" trips)? The Touring ST would be a first choice, but the definition of "touring" would be a full-dress Goldwing barcalounger, but that might be overkill since 99% of my travelling will be sub-500 mile local jaunts, with just a 1% Big Trip planned. The weight is not that much more and the increased storage is a plus.

I guess that the Lowers (Full- and Mid-) could be added later.

Reason I'm asking: my R60/5 is coming up on it's 40th anniversary and the 39-year old Vetter Windjammer is showing wear and tear and I need to do R&R on it (and the frame mount, again) this year.

I'll look around for a good used Hannigan, or I might just spring for a NIB one.

Here's some pic of my favorite airhead aftermarket fairings. I've been collecting pics for a few years.

This is a very nice bike built buy a guy in Mich, I first saw this bike at my very first BMW rally. I took a bunch of pics, but have never scanned them to digital format. These pics were supplied by the owner.

This one I first saw at the BMW MOA national in Lima. And this year in Sedalia the owner was camping nearby. I got to talk to him a bit. Built on an R80 ST. In person the orange grows on you.

The SS model Hannigan works great for me. I'm a shade over 6 feet tall and my head is right in the wind with this fairing. If I crouch I can get tucked in comfortably enough. The majority of wind blast is not hitting my torso. I'm not going to be adding any extra bubbles or windshield extensions, because I like the way the fairing looks as is. I feel pretty good after a long day or riding. I wouldn't hesitate to ride anywhere with this set up.

The storage is pretty great. I have a quart of oil and a funnel in the left side. A tow strap and jumper cables on the right. Behind the headlight, I have spare front and rear tubes. I keep some space free for items picked up en route. I could likely fit a weekends worth of clothing in there too, but I find it works best to keep it basic so things are easy to get to.

I had the fairing for sale on ADV a few years back, glad nobody wanted it, it's a keeper.
