Doc,

We will all wait. We just love to read and see the places you and LDF get to go. BTW, when was the last time either of your DRZ's got their valves checked?

Rain? You guys are getting rain?

We haven't had rain here in three months.
Everything is burning. Forest fires everywhere.

Standing by for more Mobius goodness...

M9 Day 12, Wednesday May 23, 2012

Today we'd be tourists. We'd made it back across the Great Basin, and we were in Wendover. Civilization -- showers, groceries, laundry, email, cell service, tourist attractions. We'd been pushing hard, and sitting down with the maps, reviewing the route, we realized there was no reason we couldn't sleep in, and take a breather.

Of course, it never works out that way. LDF & I were up early, and decided to hit the grocery store while Dave was recharging his batteries.

We passed this, statue,

which in silhouette looks disturbingly similar to Cristo Redentor

but in reality, is Wendover Will, the world's largest mechanical cowboy.

Back at the

Red Garter Casino,

like most gambling establishments, the facade,

is far different from the reality behind,

Dave was packed up and pretty much ready to roll.

A quick check of

our tires as they clicked over 4000miles, rear:

and front:

I think we're looking at a rear change only for M10. Gonna try some MT43's on the rears, Desert IT's should last another 2 weeks. I hope.

The critical question though, is how will these tires perform on our next destination...

Note to self

there's a gas station at the head of the access road to the salt flats. That meant that we wouldn't have to backtrack all the way back to Wendover to fill up before our next leg.

As it was, we were fully loaded with gas, extra gas, water, and all our gear. No matter, these vehicles can speed with the best of 'em.

Honestly, I didn't quite know what to expect. As we droned along the paved access road, for a brief minute I thought... OK, we're here, we've seen it, we usually don't do so well visiting touristy places on Mobius... let's just get on with our trip.

Perish the thought.

The access road

simply ends at a sign:

(put on your reading glasses, or click image to enlarge)

This place is the stuff of legends. We'd watched "The World's Fastest Indian", and just being there sent chills up our necks.

We scanned the curved horizon,

Dave took the first run:

Francine was up next

I was pretty sure she'd take top speed for the day. She has been called a "hot-rodder" on at least one occasion.

My turn

This place is magical... it just BEGS for speed... whatever you've got, wring the bejezuz out of the throttle and wind out the rev's 'till it screams for mercy.

We didn't really have a plan,

the surface was like sandpaper,

We rode back and forth for awhile,

and then gathered to compare max speeds from our GPS's.

The current Mobius speed champion:

But then Dave invoked the actual rules which decree that the average of each direction determines the speed trial.
