So...why would the bike have to be "moderish". I know, lots of advances in engines, electronics, suspension, but maybe the answer is a "modernized" older 2-stroke enduro. How long ago was it when the last 2-stroke enduro was built for the USA.

Just a thought.

That seems to be my best bet. Just as long as the older engine would be pretty reliable, and have a decent amount of power and torque it would be fine.

I believe the '78 yamaha DT 400 was the last oil injected enduro in the states. I'm not sure if it is truly the most modern of the available engines but at first glance it might work well.
I like the way it looks, power and torque are adequate. I've heard good things about how reliable they are. Parts are still available.
