Day 3, The Coast

We take a break in Bodega Bay after battling the slow traffic. We noticed a flurry of activity and a shortage of parking at many businesses along the coast. Someone said something about the salmon coming in?

We stop for another break along the beautiful coast.

The traffic situation improves the farther away from SF we go.

Pch

There are not many roads as fun...

or scenic as the PCH.

Short Day

After the late start we only make it 179 miles before I found reason to stop.
We could press on another 100 miles or so and start looking for a camping spot in the dark. Or...

We could take this cheap spot right on the beach!

We are at the Navarro River Beach Access. From the highway there are no signs indicating camping is allowed here. Even the maps I have don't list this campground.

13 years ago, our daughter was 1 when we stopped here. This is the first place she walked on the beach and saw the Ocean.

We take a walk together. Helen reads a book, while we wait for the sunset.

Sunset at Navarro Beach

Helen carries the photo gear.

The Navarro River races out to meet the surf.

There's nothing like listening to the crashing surf all night.

Great pictures! You definitely had better weather then I had this spring going up the coast. Interesting to see sun rather then rain

Hi Noah. Thanks for coming along. I've been following your report closely. Thanks for scouting our route. Have fun in Europe!

P.S. I hope you are able to recover your stolen bike. That's terrible news.

Day 4

We are well-rested and start out again on the PCH.

I love the curves in California.

And the views.

The road turns inland some towards Leggett and we enjoy perhaps the twistiest section with almost no traffic. What an awesome morning! Then it's into the Redwoods and...

The Avenue of the Giants.

Avenue of the Giants

Giant Redwoods!

The trees tower over...

a carpet of clover.

The Avenue of the Giants twists and turns through the redwoods in a thoroughly enjoyable manner.
