It's quite the plausible situations. There's also the cables to consider. It could also be a clogged jet on one side or they're just terribly out of sync. At any rate, I'd give the carbs a good go before moving to other things.

If the right side is rich and fowling plugs the plug will not recover without a good cleaning and dry out. I suggest picking up new plugs to rotate in until you get it tuned.
I am suspecting carb sync and idle jet circuit still dirty. Providing you are sure of the timing, spark to both cylinders and fuel flow.

Give us a description or pic of the plug colors.

Measure how high the carb slide is off the bottom of 1 of the carbs and see if the other measures the same which should give you a rough and dirty synchronization if you don't have any other sync equipment.

Just find something that will just fit under the slide such as a drill bit.

Smart! I'll give that a try. The cables are new, but as I mentioned there's a sharp bend under the tank, so maybe I should find a better way to route them.

Good tip. I did look at them when I gave up last night, and it was wet. I have an extra set.

I will get a picture when I give this another go tomorrow.

Thanks, everyone.

IIRC the owners manual says to turn down the idle screw on one side until that side quits, then adjust the other side to a slow idle then repeat. Fine tune as necessary with the idle screws.

That's generally a good tip for syncing any carbs if you don't have a manometer. I use that one a bit :)

Well . . . checked timing again. Spot on. Checked valve clearances--in spec. Everything is in order. Cables are adjusted properly. Slides in sync. Rode it around the block a few times, but I still can't get it to idle. I suspect maybe the pilot circuit is not jetted properly. I ordered a set of pilot jets in various sizes #25-#50. Will report back when they come in next week . . .

jets

I have several SL350s and have had similar problems that turned out to be jets. One time I had the jets cleaned by a pro and installed them after a tank cleaning, new lines, clean carb and it would not idle well. I checked everything and finally came back to the carbs and a plugged idle jet. It does not take much to plug them.

Other than that, the cb and cls were always having problems with holes in the rubber diaphrams.

No one has directed you to hondatwins.net yet? The specialists are there.

Yep, I was over there. Got some good information. Seems to be coming down to the jetting.

When you get this all dialed in you can come over and do my CL350, That is if it ever arrives.

I gave them a quick cleaning with carb cleaner solution and compressed air, since they had been sitting for about 3 years. But before I start the tuning process with the jets, I'll probably take them apart and really give them another cleaning piece-by piece.

I was having trouble with the old carbs, and it was probably the diaphragms. I got these slide carbs because it didn't seem to cost much more than replacing those diaphragms, which are crazy expensive.

Did you ever find out what size the carbs are?
