After stopping for a little gambling at the Brass Ass in Cripple Creek, we headed down Phantom Canyon toward Canyon City.

Brass Ass casino

Very nice ride! Lori grabbed some more nice shots on the fly.
Phantom Canyon road.

Once we got to Canyon City, we rode over to the Royal Gorge that Rockin Roland was telling me about!

After this we headed over to St. Elmo hot springs and tried to get a room here. They were all booked up!

So we went on to Buena Vista and found this cute cabin instead.

The owners of the cabin directed us to this nice little bar for a burger and an adult beverage.

It was called the "Larime"

Then to satisfy the sweet tooth we walked on over to K's for an ice cream and a peanut butter shake. That place rocks!

end of another day....

This photo was actually taken in downtown Breckenridge.

Next stop was Frisco.. for lunch. ( another cool town)

Then Lori says that she would like to see Vail Co.

Not staying here tonight......."Champaign taste with a Blue Ribbon income"

Then we just had to do Tennessee Pass

now on to Aspen!

SHeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Close call! wtf

at the top!
Independence pass.

Ok this next part.........I didn't get a pic......."I know, I know, I know no pic's or it didn't happen"

We were walking around Aspen and was on our way back to the bike when we saw Vince Gill and Amy Grant and her parents.

Well being from Tennessee and all, we just had to stop and chat with them. It really did happen......Scouts honor..

ok, now on to Keebler pass again! Boy did we get our arse wet!

But we saw one beautiful rainbow!

We pass through Crested Butte and head on down to Gunnision for the night!

Cool car in Gunnision....It was "jacked up"

Funny thing is we went to a lot of the same places. We were just a day apart. I believe it was possible to be in the same area at the same time. Surprised we did not run into you.

Our next morning after another night of rain and a leaky tent, we take Cottonwood Pass,

Past Taylor Reservoir, and down the Taylor river road to Hwy 135. Left turn and on to Gunnison for lunch. Roland knew of a bar in town. (of course he did). After lunch we headed off to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park where we would make camp on the south side.We stopped at the smallest Walmart in Colorado to stock up on beer. It began raining lightly Scott geared up.

We arrive and drop down a spectacular road with 16% grade to the bottom and our new camp. It took being in second gear most of the way down to not melt our brakes.

View from the bottom close to our camp.

We are greeted at our camp with a bear warning stapled to the table. (Great) Set up camp and headed up to the rim for some sunset shots.

Scott and I stop. I take this shot

and while he is taking this shot of the rainbow,

A bear runs across the road right behind him. That thing was hauling ass and neither of us got a picture off in time.
Take a better rainbow pic and move on

I was taking all these landscape and distance shots I decide to slow down and took a few like this.

Beauty was everywhere you looked. I was very inspiring, almost overwhelming.

Scott decided to head back down to camp, I guess his liver was growling. So Roland I continued on alone.

Started getting cold and were were not geared up just short's and t shirts. (Note; Hope the ATGATT Police don't get their panties all wadded up) So we headed back to camp. Truth be told, my liver was growling. I'm pretty sure I was an Alcoholic by this point in the trip.

Had a freeze dried backpacker meal cooked over a JetBoil. Those stoves are Amazing cold water to boiling in a minute. Not unbelievable but amazing. (In the words of Isle of Man competitor Guy Martin, "unbelievable would be seeing a man eat his own head.").

Rain, at this point I'm really getting sick of rain every night. I had really hoped to sleep under the stars most every night.
At some point fairly early I could hear a commotion at the far end of the camp. Figured it was the kids group putting their food in the bear proof storage. Turns out that was not the case. After getting totally pissed off and frustrated, I hear him pass my tent. He then proceeded to try and rape the bear proof food storage container across the path from my tent. I got pissed off since it was past quiet hours so I yelled at him. That worked, by the time I had my shoes on and unzipped the tent he was gone. My neighbors, had there flashlight out and were shining it everywhere. Figured it was a good time to walk and drain the lizard. The bear never came back or at least it did not wake me again.

In the morning we rode the river road to the end and back up out of the canyon.

After messing around on the rim for a few hours we headed to Ouray for lunch and up and over the million dollar highway to Silverton. All I can say is a million dollars was a bargain for that road.

Been away from the computer for a few days. Finished the summer off by going to the beach for a week. I'm going to try to wrap up my portion of this report and hand it off to Todd for his wrap up. Without further adieu...

We roll into Silverton and it is evident we are not the first to arrive.

The location is awesome. There are no bad ways to get to Silverton. We mingle for a little while and then decide we need to procure some beer. Roland says he knows a really cool brewery in down town. ( of course he does ). Scott, Roland and I head off down the main street sans gear, since the speed limit is 25 mph. i figured if I'm willing to ride my bicycle down hill at speeds close to 50 mph wearing what what has the protective quality of my underwear, I should be able to survive a mishap, should one occur, in shorts, t shirt, and flip flops. Passed some cool stuff on the way there.

Well the beer sucked. Good thing we sampled it first. We needed to find someplace else to stock up. We talked about heading off to the liquor store. About that time we started to hear thunder. Scott and I took a look out side and decided we needed to make tracks back to the rally central and the cover of our room. We prodded Roland a couple of times then gave up and left him for dead. The rain began very subtly for the first minute then started to pour right as we got back to Rally central. We were cracking up thinking about Roland riding down the street in it. Next came hail.

So kind of worried about Roland. We don't see him for a while not sure where he took shelter till I hear someone talking about a crazy Canadian who parked his bike in a river near the beer store. I knew it had to be him. I asked if they had a picture so I could identify the body and this is what they showed me.

Yep that's him.

Scott and I make a beer run, more like a walk and stock our fridge. This should take us through the first night.

Have I mentioned that we are raging alcoholics at this point. My Liver literally growls by 4pm every day.

Ready for the first night. Time to meet some of the other crazies who are calling this place home for the next few days.

So the first night Big John our fearless leader, describes a number of organized rides being led the next morning. His "Big Bike, Easy Ride" sounds like the ride for me. He described it to the best of my recollection as follows; "I rode this entire ride last year 2 up with my wife on my VStrom last year. We started with 19 bikes and 17 dropped out due to difficulty, but it is all rideable. If you come you will ride through what I believe to be the most scenic areas of the entire state. It will be mostly dirt FS roads with a little pavement thrown in. It should take us about 7 hours."

Have a pow wow with Todd, Rolland, Scott and Brandon. We all agree this is the route for us. We decide to get the route and tackle it on our own. For some reason, Todd Volunteers to lead a ride. He describes it as the "Fast Big Bike Easy Ride any one is welcome we will take the same route as Big Johns gang only a more spirited pace." Ok cool.

Morning comes and we line up I think we had a total of 12 takers on the "Todd led ride" when Todd comes up to me and says, "Since I'm riding two up, I think it would be better if you lead, Lori and I will bring up the rear." Wha? OK off we go to I don't know where. Just trying to find the first turn for Corkscrew Pass and I'll make it up as I go. Fortunately, for me Todd2, who is riding a DRZ had been over Corkscrew the day before. After a false stop and corrected by Todd2 I find the turn. My Mama didn't raise no dummy so I talk Todd2 into taking the lead, till we get back to pavement. Todd2 did a great job keeping the group together. Here are some pictures I took of the back country we rode through that morning.

The route took us over Corkscrew, Cinnamon, California, Owl Creek, Passes. I may have this messed up but my memory is getting fuzzy at this point. Maybe Todd has better notes and can clear this up.

We stopped in Ouray? for a celebratory beer and then head back for the festivities.

Yep that's him.

So by the way, it was the liquor store I got stranded in (Note the extra bottle in hand, BlackBerry Brandy). The rain & hail was brutal and then a flash flood started coming down the street. At one point it was washing up over & splashing thru the middle of the rim. When the rain actually stopped the flood level actually kept going up for a while also. Finally I just couldn't wait any longer. There was no way around it and I had to wade thru the deeper section first to get to where I am standing.

Head count at top of Hurricane Pass.

"are we really this high?"

Here is where "riding solo" the other Todd, and Rob are making plans for the next stop. Herding cats ain't easy!

Land

Finally made it to Owl Creek Pass. another photo op stop...

Headed home...The last pass on the Million Dollar Hwy.

One last look back, until next year.

Lori and I decided to ride one more Pass before dropping her off in Denver. We couldnt resist..it was on our way.
