Travelling around Australia is easy. If you want to do it on the beach or on dirt roads only it gets harder. There are long stretches of nothing in Western Australia and fuel and food would need to be planned. If you stick to the more major roads it can be done with little gear and planning.

http://www.loston.com/ Check out Steve Crombie - I understand that he tried to do the whole east coast using dirt tracks only...

explore by 4wd publications

As 4wdriving is popular in Aus, there is a number of books on exploring Aus available. These have route maps & directions & the roads would be suitable for larger dualsport bikes. Most Australian camping stores carry these books.

Check out the book "Is That Thing Diesel" By Paul Carter

He did it on a bio fuel powered motorcycle, but he had a significant support truck.

The book is entertaining enough, but he's not exactly Hemmingway.

I believe this guy did. Haven't got around to reading his report yet though.

I thought I had a couple others saved as well, but can't seem to find them at the moment. This has been a dream of mine for a few years now. Money is a big issue though. Once I get enough though, I'm going to do it.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing next Aug-Oct, 3 month coast tour of Australia on my GSA during next work sabbatical. Only I don't care what percentage is dirt/street, just want the GSA for any dirt I encounter. Just got a quote of $750 to ship the bike from Los Angeles to Brisbane. Wondering about selling it there after the trip to avoid shipping it back...

The book is "Twisting Throttle" by Mike Hyde - worth the read but it's not a how-to book if that is what you're looking for.
