Wheel spacers
Just because I was in a hurry, there was no excuse not to replace the spacer bushings on the front and rear axles when swapping wheels, especially before riding off and grinding the ABS sensors in one mile.

Hey ... can I jump in?
Just because I was in a hurry, there was no excuse not to put the oil pan drain plug back in before I start pouring in the fresh oil ...

While you're picking up a new sensor, check the price on a set of spacers. What is the price of safety??
We all do dumb shit now and then. Better a ground up sensor than a wobbly "off". Wobbly off....sounds dirty.

I broke an abs sensor in a hurry once also. Dumped my bike when I had a backpack strapped on the back, I picked up the bike and headed down the trail. I thought it was kinda souning funny, and looked back and noticed the pack ahd slid off of the tail rack and covered the exhasut.
6 In hole melted through my backpack. 1 of the straps got caught in the ABS ring and broke off the sensor. Lesson learned, Check your load!! Ryan

this guy makes the spacers in stainless steel, they last a lot more than the aluminum's OEM. http://www.bashplates.de/BMW-F800GS-...h-ABS::25.html

The guy doesn't need new spacers. He just needs to tie a string around his finger. Why would you need stainless spacers?? They do not move or wear on anything. Why add the additional un-sprung weight?? GH

Aluminium spacers do wear
I had these stainless spacers on my XChallenge as the standard spacers were stuffed.
I did a lot of very dirty and muddy off road. If you ride a lot of dirt the seals pic up a lot of grit. (Grease makes it worse) The grit pretty quickly wears a groove in the spacer to the point that the seal is no longer effective. You then get more water in the bearing and need to replace your bearings earlier. I had this on my xchallenge which is Why I went for the stainless spacers. They worked great. Dirt bike riders just put up with it as they are riding relative short distances and can check these things regularly. For adventure touring you really want to be able to go long distances without worrying about bearing failure. Sold my bike, so no pictures. Sorry. I have not got them on my 800Gs. I do not plan to do as much off-road but do plan to do gravel and dirt roads. I will keep an eye on them and see how they go. They looked OK when I changed the bearings and seals last week. (New to me, high mileage bike, so getting my maintenance up to scratch) At 90,000km they look ok. On my xchallenge the spacers were stuffed by 6,000km. |

Seeing as we have a 'stupid questions' thread, why not have a 'dumb/stupid/embarrassing things i have done with my 800gs' thread, could be amusing, even educational
