damaged Joint link bmw 1150
It is Hard to belive that this one little part would make our sidecar handle so bad .
It is a Joint link from the Upper fork cross brace on our 1150gsa sidecar We have a l link front end with the top mounted the same as a standard gsa . My brother has been riding the bike for the last month, he was complaining every day about the way it was pulling hard to the left and moving around a lot on the road . We had only just put a 165.80 15 front car tire on it before he took the bike on his trip . I thought that was the trouble .I took it for a ride today . It was a real shock to me to feel how bad it was to ride . It pulled to the left all the time except when going slow , where it moved around some thing shocking. Not very nice to ride .The one on the right in the photo had around 10mm play up and down in it ![]() I took it out and put a new one in with a home made puller and all is good with the sidecar again![]() . ![]() Cheers Ian |

I'm familiar with that part though mine are OK.
When I wanted to drop my forks last year, the hex nuts on top of the stanchions refused to budge. I tried heat but since there are so many electrical connections in the general vicinity of the triple trees, I did not get aggressive with the heat. I gave up trying, and the next time the bike was at the dealer for service I asked them to use their magical tools to remove and replace those nuts so I could do it myself next time. They did. Now I can drop my forks and inspect that part (which is indeed called the "joint link" on the fiche) whenever I want. Yours, by the way, look quite nasty. Did you have the plastic covers in place to protect them from water and dirt? |

Hi Drone.
I do not have the plastic cover in place to protect them . The new studs and nuts on the l link sit to high to use them . I did not thing i needed the plastic covers as i thought they were only rubber bushings ![]() I am glad you said some thing about them, thank you ![]() I will have to find somthing else to do the job. Cheers Ian |

Hi Pops, not so many response to your post
cause not a lot of L.L. on the GS around.May I make one comment as I own a R1150GSA with a EZS L.L. The regular OEM fork moves up and down and then a little bit forward as it compresses, so there is a need for the 2 joints link on the upper fork cross brace. The way a L.L. works is that the 2 forks do not have any more play, it becomes completely rigid with the upper brace . The fork on my L.L. are made of two solid tubes, and they are bolted on the brace with 2 big bolts, washers, after having removed of course the 2 joints links.

I'm planning on really going through my rig this winter.I'll have to put this on my list of to do's.But even with all the steering mods I've done I still think a leading link Front End not only look good, but I do like the way they work..Thanks for this...

![]() . That is a great way to do it .I was trying to think of a way of getting rid of the joint links as i have still have not got the new ones .$ 154.00 each in Australia My next plan was to make a new top t tree to mount the top of the forks .I will have a go at making the tops of our l link the same as yours on the weekend and see how it works out. Thanking you Ian |

TwinTwin--thanks. That's quite the setup! The brake caliper mount is something else, then the Stroker wheel, and you even still got the ABS ring on there. Cool. Did you buy that here in the U.S. or order it from Europe?

The look did not motivate my decision to go wih a L.L. I do not really know if an leading link will complimente the already ugly look of a R1150 GSA OEM front end. When you are riding a rig, with a MC tire on the front, all the handling, turning , braking, rely mostly on one inch or so of tire contact. I had some close calls with my R1100GS rig, especially when the road is wet even if I did not take it hard on the throttle. So the car tire on the front was for me the way to go, and the L.L. was the logical choice.

Close up on the caliper holder. The 2 small hole fitting are for the fender, not on in this picture. ![]() This in a project on the making, the bike will soon make a visit to Claude to have a subframe mounted. I also would like to apologize to Pops, as I had no intention to hijack his thread. My initial intention was to start a new thread when the rig will be completed. |
