ID these bike bits?

Can anyone ID this, which a friend found hanging in the rafters of a barn he bought?:

I think you need to call Castle and Beckett... Looks more like a murder scene than anything to me!

I'm going to guess that it's a late 40's/early 50's NSU Fox. Those had a strange looking enclosed rear suspension with a swingarm, and a leading link front fork with a more bicycle like connection to the steering neck of the frame.
And the cantilevered saddle suspended by a large coil spring near the front of the cantilever.

The rear fender stays don't look the same, but just about everything else matches.

It does look like it. Thanks. Supposedly the motor is around somewhere. Interesting little bike.
