I always put my Husaberg in the bed diagonal and it fits beautifully (tailgate up). MPG is about 13, but whatever,,,,,,didnt buy it for gas mileage. Its the family hauler vacation mobile, we use one of those big plastic turtle roof top things for vacation and just set it in the bed. Bicycles on a rack off the hitch..........

My 2006 Taco was the Access Cab (xtra cab, not the 4 dr). If it was the 4dr. I would probably still be driving it since it was paid off. It woulda been tight, but it was paid for $$$. We looked at the 4dr Tacoma, but we went with the Tundra, the price difference was next to nothing (less than 2k I think) and the Crew Max vs. the Taco 4dr. is a huge diffence. The crew max is very roomy.
WTF, 13 mpg is pretty bad if that is unloaded. 5.7 tundra was a consideration for my next truck, but shit, that mileage is a deal killer. Think I'll keep my diesel, only time I see 13 is pulling 7000+ pounds of boat and trailer

LOVE the International! I want one of those or a Travelall.

I drive this: Tacoma S-Runner

It has done 95% of everything I need, plus the occasional trackday. For the last 5% that's heavier that this can handle, I swap trucks with a buddy with a HD Silverado.

Problem is, I now need something that seats five on a daily basis, and this only has belts for four.

I keep thinking about an early Duramax or 7.3 Ford so I can at least stay in the mileage ballpark (I average 20-21mpg with the Taco) and still be able to haul a bike or two, plus pull my little car hauler. From talking to my friends that own them, anything in the half-ton ballpark is lucky to get 15mpg, so why bother?

Having driven a truck as my primary for fifteen years or so including hauling the bikes I've come to the conclusion that having a trailer is far more useful. If you need a truck for other things then fine, but just loading and unloading given the height of beds these days is a pita for example.

Plus, as a daily driver with nothing in the bed they're a gas guzzling overkill. If I was going that route I'd rather do a big SUV as its more useful and still trailer the bikes. YMMV.

+1

There's a few known weaknesses, so read up on em and go in with open eyes.

My 97 F150 got 17-ish around town and low 20s on road trips. 2WD extended cab, stepside with the 5.4. Roommate had a similar truck with the 4.6. He consistently got a mpg or two better than I did.

My little brother has an Expedition. 11mpg is about what he's getting driving back and forth to work.

I had an '01 Duramax/Allison extended-cab Sierra as a company truck for a while, and really miss it: 20mpg everywhere and could do everything I asked of it. The Fords we had at the time were 6.0's, and as much as I loved the rest of the truck I got tired of being stranded in remote places when things blew up on that engine.

Problem here in So Cal is that nearly every stinkin' one you find for sale is a bro-truck with at least six inches of "compensation" (lift) and a bald set of 37" Mud Terrains. I gotta start looking in other areas.

I hate to give away a good secret, but AZ is the place you wanna be looking. Especially here during the fall/winter/spring. Snowbirds ya know.

For our uses with three dogs, our '07 double cab Tacoma with a shell on the back works out a LOT better transporting those shedding monsters than an SUV ever would. Yes, an SUV can haul the dogs in a style to which they would like to be accustomed, but I would be spending all my free time vacuuming the entire interior. A separate rear enclosed compartment has a lot of advantages! Plus, with the 6' bed I can (barely) stretch out and camp in the back of the truck if desired.

We would put our dog in a kennel in the back to make packing easier.
Or you could do it Romney style and put the kennel on the roof.

Now that we've got rid of our POS Jeep and now have an f150 supercrew, road trips are a pleasure.
Funny thing is the fullsize gets better hwy mileage than the Jeep ever did.
The practicality of a crew cab for us, our junk and our kids is astounding compared to anything
shy of maybe a Suburban.

No dogs right now, but in the past:

Pointers stayed in boxes. Usually in the horse trailer.

Spaniels didn't shed, so it didn't really matter.
