Four riders for reverse leg: Darwin to Perth, Australia, Sept 2013

Just seeking interest and suggestions on arranging another group of 4 riders to do the return trip for us from Darwin to Perth in September 2013. Four of us in Melbourne are trying to overcome the significant transport costs involved in buying and setting up 4 second-hand Suzuki DR650s in Melbourne, crating and sending them Melbourne-Perth then sending them Darwin-Melbourne after riding them from Perth to Darwin along the Canning Stock Route (CSR). The idea is to arrange with another group of 4 riders (mates or strangers) to ride the bikes back from Darwin to Perth by road or track - maybe even the CSR.

We'd arrange to buy the bikes from a very helpful dealer in Perth or Geraldton who could set them up (Safari tanks, bash plates, hand guards, pannier racks, UHD tubes, tyres and maybe pannier bags and extra fuel containers) so that we fly to Perth, ride to Darwin (August 2013), have the bikes serviced with new tyres and hand over the bikes to the other 'team' for the trip back to Perth (September). We'll need contingency plans, but the bikes may be able to sit in the very helpful Darwin dealer for a while. The bikes will obviously be well set up, have limited kms and still be under new bike warranty. We may even provide camping gear like tents, mattresses and cooking gear.

Once in Perth the bikes would be serviced (maybe new tyres) where they could be sold on consignment or even pre-sold to the dealer. That may even lead to a third group that wanted to do another trip somewhere from Perth. They could even be stripped back to their original state for sale and the off-road gear send back to Melbourne.

We'd welcome any suggestions/advice on the whole scheme, particularly inter-state registration, transfer of registration, insurance etc. I was thinking the financial side needed to be on a 'purchase' basis but would work out like a bond if the bikes were pre-sold back in Perth. We may need to create a website to keep interested riders informed of progress. We've all been riding enduro bike for many years, did the Simpson desert unsupported last year (3 x DR 650, 1 KTM 640) and Cape York in 2004 (2 x KTM 525s, 2 x 450, 1 DRZ 400) with 4WDs.

They're just ideas at the moment, but I'm sure with advice, suggestions, ideas, comments and references we can work it out. So please contribute in whatever way you can. It's a great adventure for us and hopefully a great opportunity for others. We're obviously not doing it to make money, merely to defray the transport costs. We may even try to get discounts as a minor form of sponsorship, but that's only a dream so far.

Thanks in advance,
Rod

Thanks for the offer. Hopefully we'll get others interested in joining you. No doubt we will need help on many fronts. Having a local will be great.

Thanks CCCC. We may need to have a combination of options e.g. sell two bikes in Darwin and have two people ride Darwin- Perth for repurchase. Selling to fellow riders would be better in terms of eliminating dealer profit but harder in other ways with timing and pulling out of arrangement e.g. ill-health, family, work. 'Maybe' is good enough at this early stage. Hopefully we can line up the dates. We chose August-September because it's in-between the rains/floods and the heat and flies.

Another one

Hi mate. Got another guy up here and possibly one more who's keen to ride you're bikes back to Perth for you. Don't foresee any problems.
