Oct 7th ride
Yeah that should work for me.
I will confirm as we get closer to next Sunday. I am almost two hours away so maybe a time around 8am start would help me a little. I can't ride this weekend so by next Sunday I will be ready to roll. This area is new to me so I will be looking forward to it. Also long range forecast looks like low to mid 80's as the day's high. So the weather should be nice. Probably a little dusty out there though.

Sand skills are a must for any desert rider, I'm not sayin I want to ride all sand, but folks miss out on alot of good riding if theyre always trying to avoid sand on their rides.

Stayin' old school for a while. The boys (and girl) and I are gearing up for 4-5 days of Death Valley and Western Nevada. I have reasonable expectations Bessie will make it, and in comfort. Spark, fuel, or oil are all faults easily diagnosed and likely field fixed. Can't imagine riding remote on a BMW/Huskie fuel injected tech anything where the R2 unit has a blown motivator. ..or the unobtainium chip gave out/shorted..or the save the planet smog system faulted and shut down the unobtainium chip to spare the planet.. how do I fix that? Me saying that coming from two older Huskies. Hope to see some great photos of your rides!

Meet up
I will put one vote up for the Shadow mountain rd / 395 meet up location.
If it cuts out pavement riding and it would be easier for me to get to. But I don't want to miss out on anything fun. So what ever works best for you guys. Any plans for lunch or should I pack a lunch (something more that trail snacks). I have to agree with Cbig on the new technology of the newer bikes. Alot of them are locked up and now only the dealer can make changes to the FI system. Give me a carborated bike any day. At least for me... I understand them and after twenty years of working with them I can tear them apart and put them back together. Even if I had to out on the trail. Sorry for the ealier commit on you XR600... It is a good bike. I had a XR650R that was an awesome bike for the desert and open areas. But it was almost 12 years old... A little on the heavy side and a bitch to start (sometimes). I am loving my new KTM XC-W 450 and the magic button..!! Alot has changed in the last 12 years..!!

Where are you guys going from Shadow Mountain?
Quote:
I remember last year meeting up with two older guys touring around the back of Mammoth working their way South. One on I'm guessing about a 1987 blue and white XL600 that looked pretty fresh and the other on some red Honda XL. Loaded with camp gear touring the west. I asked him why those bikes. The 1987 guy said he was the original owner and he had reasonable expectation in the morning when they broke camp his bike would run. They were not slow. Something to be said about intimate knowledge of your bike's condition. Me, I'll probably always be old school. 10,15 years from now after beating the xr's down to where repairs aren't economical I will buy a 2007 450 exc pumpkin and someone will say "...why you riding that? You should get real dirt bike! That's too old to be fast ..."

Jeff -
I think it would be good to post some kind of list of where, who and when rides are going on the first page if you are able

Your XR600 is a great bike and will be a lot of fun where you're going! Having said that, I can see owning a street legal DI 2 smoke, that would be fun as hell!

I'm fine with meeting up out there for a trail ride, either way its lunch on the trail so bring chow for sure. If we stage at 395 don't have to worry about fuel since it will be a 60 mile or so trail ride. The 395 spot is a half hour from my house and I have the option of riding my 300XC or 530 dualsport since no plate required for the trail area.

I'll go anywhere the group wants to meet. But as a guy that made the move to ride out of my back yard (hence the theme of this thread) I don't wanna make the desert dwellers drive OUT of the desert to meet those that have to commute anyway... and then ride pavement to trails. The point of living here is NOT to have to commute... and then ride pavement back to trails.
![]() If you live in Long Beach or Anaheim another 15-30 minutes aint gonna kill you. ![]() Just food for thought... I'll meet you guys whereever Mutt decides.

Want to Ride!
Dear Mr's. Mutt and Bolt-
My son also races (1X H1) and I am an X Expert racer. Today I did a training ride. Cleghorn-Silverwood-Crab Flats-Big Pine Flats(loose rocky switchbacks). Usually I turn back there but, today I followed the graded rd. towards Hesperia. Took a left on a freshly graded Jeep Rd. that headed back towards the mountain. Turned into cool singletrack 2W01. Crossed the creek again at a rocky spot and headed up the hill. All along was fun looking trails. I was alone and did'nt totally know where I was going so I hooked onto the 3?34 past Pinnacles and home. 101 miles. I sure would like to ride those and other trails with someone who knows the spots. All I ever did growing up was race, over the past 2 years I got the trailriding BUG! Going to be in Baja Oct. 5-13. Please consider letting me tag along on a future ride, you will be making an old man happy! Thanks- Brad |
