Another new member from Central FL checking in. East Orlando to be exact. I currently don't have a DS, just my sportbike, but I'm currently saving up for a WR250R. Hopefully by Jan I'll be able to explore what Orlando has to offer besides traffic congested streets.

Sounds good. I saw some of your pics in the other threads on here and that pretty much settled my decision on what I want for my second bike. It was between a DS or a cruiser, but now that I know Orlando actually has some places to enjoy a DS, I'm going that route.

There's also Croom, the Spacecoast, Ocala NF, Eglin AFB, and Blackwater. The US, State, and County Hwys can get you around to these places just fine if you want to stay off the tollroads and interstates. I use Hwy44 or Hwy40 (New Smyrna or Daytona) over from US1 or I-95 most times I ride to Ocala NF from Melbourne. The smaller roads are much nicer, as long as they aren't choked with traffic lights and 25MPH-zones. Chuluota and Snow Hill can take you north from E Orlando pretty nicely. Dean Rd up to Aloma, over to Tuskawilla can get you closer to Ocala NF decently as well. Once you get up to Deland or Altoona, you're pretty much at the NF.

I ride a DR650, but a lighter bike with knobby tires (especially the front) is much easier to handle/lift in the sand around here. Offroad boots and a decent chest protector can help keep you from having a bad day on the trails too. Hook up with a group and a bunch of people can show you the ropes...and trails.

Are the majority of the trails our here set up for a smaller bike like a 250, or would a 650 do alright? I'm still shooting for a wr250r, but used ones are pretty rare and I am not paying over 6k for a bike I know I'll be dropping since I'll be new to dirt. I see a lot of KLRs and DR650s for sale for dirt cheap. So I'm considering those.

You can do it on a 650 but the learning curve will be much steeper DAHIK

go for the WR. fuel injected with awesome suspension. that bike handles excellent. im not in favor of the DR650 because of its very very tall gearing and 17 inch rear wheel making it hard to find good dual sport or offroad tires. and not the KLR because its about 400 pounds wet. WR is super light, and flick able. its also pretty fast. on par with a DRZ400 almost.

I think a majority of our stuff is good for a sub-300lb 400cc (around 40WHP) with a wide spread of gearing. Grunt is nice in the deep stuff, but the 350lb+ weight of most 650s and bigger can wear you out if you're a bike-dropping noob like me. Whatever you decide to get, appropriate knobs with lowered PSI, and practicing good technique, can make riding sand much easier.

+1. Sportbike AND dualsport all in one! My 6fowty is a lot of fun too though. 950 isn't great for learning dirt, glad it was my second bike...

Sounds like a 500 KTM to me... you can get em for around $9800.00
