What? I already posted GPS tracks. Just look at this image that I posted earlier. Those are GPS tracks! With your Google Earth skills, you should be able to figure out exactly where those tracks are and go ride them without me even knowing! I'm fulfilling my GPS tracks promise right here!

Russ and I just knocked out 4 days and another 700 miles of prerunning. These stages were in the Kanab and Jacob Lake region, mostly North of the Grand Canyon North Rim.

We had a bit of rain and hale on the first day, but it was great after that. This was a pretty tough prerun, with several really gnarly up hills and down hills, a full day of sand, some challenging navigation, and lots of locked gates and No Trespassing signs. We found our way through or around all that, resulting in a couple more great and varied stages.

A great wash, with a surprise half way through. We took a quick break in the shade:

Wow, that looks really awesome.

The navigation in the video is going to be hellish to get right.

That was an HP section, so just follow a compass heading. Unfortunately a fence blocked our path just over the hill, so we had to cut it out (that part of the route, not the fence). In the prerunning we get to see all kinds of cool and crazy stuff that gets cut out of the final route due to one problem or another. So, the preruns are actually more of an adventure and often more fun than running the route after it's all completed.

It's not a good surprise. But when I find something that's a pain in the ass, I try to find more of it! Some of the washes turn into rocky hell, while others are beautiful smooth flat sand. This one was easy getting into and hard to get out of. When you go down a wash that feeds into the Grand Canyon, the walls get higher and steeper the further down you go.

Thankfully, I just stumbled across this thread today. A few comments…

1. Oh my God Scott, you are such a massive geek! But I love you for it!

2. I curse you for living my fantasy life!

3. How do you know all of these routes want raised the ire of the various land managers?

4. Although it seems selfish, I would agree with the "don't distribute this to the masses" perspective.

5. Did I mention you're living my fantasy life?

6. Please don't EVER crash with that navigation system mounted on your bike!

7. I'm guessing it's really impractical to pre-ride in the rain. Or is the paper plastic covered/laminated for dry erase markers?

And I'm sure I'm forgetting other comments.

I know, which is why I put the effort in now, before I can't do it anymore. It was lots of fun a few years ago when I was doing the rally training routes in the Mojave Desert region. But the Indian country had been calling me since my college years, and I finally got back out there with this project. Once I rediscovered that region, a whole new world of dual-sport opened up. The rain wasn’t too bad, and most of that day was sandy, so it actually made the riding easier. We did hit mud late in the day, which was pretty bad. We stopped at the car wash on the way back to the hotel and cleaned up for the next three days of sun. The roadbook is sealed from the rain, so no problem with that.

On the last day I crashed in the sand probably 6 times. Fortunately none we bad, and minimal damage to the bike and me.

I used all three of my voice recorders (used for taking notes along the route, where route or roadbook problems were discovered). At one time or another, each failed, but it looks like I didn’t loose any data. Redundant redundancy wins again and again! On this trip, we seemed to have a lot more route blockages than usual (mostly closed Paiute Indian land). My 76CSx GPS and Holux GPS recorder worked fine. The rain caused some problems for our radios. I need a new battery in the bike, and an ICO that doesn’t reset every time I start the bike with a low battery. I need to make sure my extra gas bottle on the bike has gas in it BEFORE I run the main tanks dry! I need to remember to fill my camelback, especially before the toughest day! Other than that stuff, things went pretty well.

There will probably be a couple of stages that are let out to the masses, but the majority will be handled something like DVR. If you know what DVR is, then you’re probably in, otherwise study up on the R in DVR, and get an ICO and MD or F2R from RMS.

You are obviously a tried and true bona fide ADV guru but your statements above still make me wonder if you're just not getting it. Getting lost, coming across unexpected obstacles, locked gates, no trespassing signs, deteriorating weather, etc. etc. all IMPROVE the experience, not lesson it! Geez don't you get that!
