Exploring the Navajo Nation---LEGALLY!

Howdy folks, I'm headed up to the Navajo Nation tomorrow for some geologic field work that I need to do for my masters. I'll be collecting samples from areas that are usually off limits to non-natives. Some of the highlights include locations high in the Chuska Mountains, spires of Monument Valley, and smaller volcanic plugs near Ship Rock. Sexy if you ask me.

I'll be leaving Socorro tomorrow morning and wanted to see if anyone was interested in meeting up somewhere along the road. If you're travelling with me, you'll have legal access to places that are waaay off the radar. If New Mexico is another country, then the Navajo Nation is different planet. Its wickedly cool.

I plan on being in the field for a few days, camping in the mountains if I can find a secluded spot. Thats technically illegal but where I am going, others don't really go. If I'm west of the mountains, I'll be staying at Canyon de Chelly. East, I'll stay outside of Farmington a little ways. I'll probably be up there for a few days. I'm thinking about returning on Tuesday.

So...If you want to see some cool places and ride where literally no one rides, come along. You'll want a dual sport/adventure bike. I'll be on an old KTM 620 with bags and crap to carry rock samples. Yup, I'm loading down my bike with rocks.

Cheers

Sorry for the lack of notice. Planning isn't exactly my strong suit. "Um, how is the KTM doing? Lets see, two oil leaks, no turn signals, still haven't bought a big gas tank...Screw it, it'll work just fine."

Sounds like a grand adventure. I do IT support for a bunch of geologists on a college campus, and geez they get to do some really cool stuff in between doing a lot of really tedious stuff! Take lots of pictures!

A few snapshots from some previous Jeep based field excursions:

This was considered a "Major Connector Road". There goes a brand new $200 tire.

The timing is off, but otherwise I would have loaded and turned wheels toward Navajo country. I've thought many times of the great riding and scenery that is off limits to us. It's a shame that someone in the Navajo Nation can't put together an Adventure Tour of their country. Hope you have a great time out there, and enjoy the sand!

"volcanic plugs"...are those the rock thumbs, in the fields, south of Ship Rock ?

Fascinating area. I really enjoyed Mon Valley, SR and Canyon de Chelly. When I return I'm going to see if I can explore the bottom of CdC.

Just back from Ranier Nat Park and found a ridge of mountain, that was formed by the same process as Ship Rock.

Have a good time.

Cool pics. I can sorta visualize where you are.

I did some surveying down near Sanoste a couple years ago, but other than that it's usually just looking at that from the highway.
