Catching back up with your report here. Dang, almost missed the Guatemalan part. My wife is Guatemalan (half Mayan) and we have been down a couple times in the last few years visiting family and doing some tourist jaunts. I noticed someone brought up the civil war. She was there during that time although lived in the city so was not directly impacted. But she is highly distrustful of the military, politicians, etc. She has followed the recent trials closely. Here is a good documentary related to it. "Granito: How to Nail a Dictator"

Beautiful country and people. I'll have to look up CA Tours next time we go, which will be in 2013.

Hey Paul,

we are following your stories as well as we are just a few days behind you on a similar route. We are riding 2up on a Vstrom and now are in Flores, Peten.

Good luck with the trip and let's keep in touch!

rolled a few hundred yards up the road from CA Tours to the Hostel and settled in...i had already planned for Spanish lessons with a place called Spanish for travelers (www.spanishtraveling.com) my reason for choosing them was they take you places and not just sit you in class room, not show you a photo of a cup of coffee but take you to a coffee plantation for example

so i have a walk around in the morning before lessons begin, these are just a few quick snaps the better detailed photos will be added later as i get to walk around in my free time

My first outing with the school was supposed to be to a coffee plantation but it was canceled so we could go to a wedding rehearsal, here are the the couple, and the rehearsal was held in a Mayan market

he is Guatemalan and she is from Slovenia...in this photo the lady to the far left has just explained most things about the wedding and marriage and then said the family expects 13-14 children, hence the look on her face and they gave her a baby doll to practice with

the bride (to be and mother) have been given gifts for them to work with and provide for the husband

fresh tortillas we made and we had a traditional Guatemalan lunch

here is my crazy Spanish teacher with a fiesta mask

lots more of Antigua to come...

Been looking forward to you walking around Antigua with your camera.

Bring it!

Try to make Chichicastenango for market day if you have time.

Haven't made Chichicastenango yet. My good friend JC is from there. More indigenous peoples coming into town than Antigua, I'm told.

Interesting public wash (clothes) facility across from CATours.

No man, Ruuuuun for your life! If your bike ever touches Vitto's place , you enter a vortex where you are never allowed to leave Venezuela (just look where Throttlemeister did the work on his bike when he warped the head)

ALL three of my bikes are parked there at the moment, have been there since August when I came to Mexico

I like the startled look on the grooms face when he heard "13 to 18"!

Is Fuego still erupting? I was there 7 years ago and we hiked up Acatenago and watched Fuego erupt (mildly but still scary)! Highly recommend if its safe.
Also worth checking out is the macadamia nut farm (Valhalla)? Just outside of Antigua.
Brings back great memories. Land of eternal spring!
Great report and pics!
