You realize you crossed it south of Winnett? The Musselshell has a different drainage area. If you travel upstream from the confluence at the UL bend you would go south to Melstone and then turn and head west. The headwaters of the river are in the Snowy Mtn and the north side of the Crazy's. To the south of this drainage is the Yellowstone River, to the North is the Judith, Smith, and various creeks feeding the Missouri. In a dry summer, the river almost dries up, which is a problem for the towns along the way that use it for drinking water. David

Recently FWS closed some roads. The rest of the roads they numbered, and the rules for the area says that motor vehicles must stay on numbered roads. This is road 315 and is a legal route to the wildlife refuge.
Some Maps of the CMR I know Doc is kidding about CM Russell, but if any of you travellers stop in Great Falls, there is a great museum in CM's honor. Charlie is one of those famous Montanans we're kinda proud of. Beauty Parlor Exalted Ruler - Some Russell Terriers ![]() Last of the 5000 David

David, that is, I believe, Cheatgrass...an invasive species. But:
Since the mid 20th century, cheatgrass has become the most consumed and widely occurring forage species in the Intermountain Area. If it had not been for cheatgrass invasion of ranges where the native perennial grasses were reduced by excessive, continuous, improperly timed grazing in the late 19th and early 20th century, the range livestock industry would have collapsed by the mid 20th century.

![]() ![]() I crossed Mt. west to east last year and ran out of daylight in Winnett. As it was past the middle of Oct. I sought out indoor sleeping and was allowed to take a room at the motel. For dinner I went to the Winnett Bar. The gal running the place was a hoot and a half. I showed her a pic of the rubber duck that was taped to my front fender, from the hotel in Great Falls where the Sip and Dip Tiki lounge is located. She was impressed enough with my style to offer the Winnett Bar racing duck to add to the load I was hauling. I'd love to go back with a more suitable bike to ride some of the roads you experienced . Love the West.

Day 6--------early start
This sprinkler thing is just too funny. We slept a little uneasy thinking the sprinklers would come on in the night.
I'd asked the gal next door at the pool if she could shut the sprinklers off till we left but she said she wasn't allowed to. Like very busy little beavers---without a word from anyone----we all were packing up earlier than normal to get our tents off the grass in case the sprinklers came on. We got all packed up---walked a block to breakfast and when we came back................ You can see what we found. Some of our gear under the shelter almost got wet. ![]() Francine-----so glad she didn't get wet. ![]() Another beautiful day---as we headed East on Hwy. 200 then South on Melstone Rd. towards Melstone where gas and food were available. I had been leading and got way ahead of the group and climbed way up a steep climb on top of a hill and waited for the group to come along. I knew they'd plainly see me sitting up there. ![]() And it was somewhere about here on this trip--------I was getting tired of carrying around my camp chair. But ----you do what you have to do----and I dreamed of one of those Kermit folding chairs. But----if Dr. Rock can carry speakers for our campfire----I'll carry my chair without bitching.

I been following this thread since the beginning.
After reading about the Kermit chairs I ordered one last week. Hope it lives up to expections. This thread is one my favorites and I enjoy all the write ups and pictures.

What a great ride! The Mobius crew find all the good stuff.
Gotta watch out for those sprinklers in city parks, or anywhere the grass is greener. We camped in Eureka, NV last summer and I noticed that the grass was really nice. I couldn't see any sprinklers at first, but walked around slowly, moving the grass with my foot, and found the pop-up heads. Luckily, the parks manager came along and offered to turn them off for us during the two days we camped there. It could have been messy! |
