2014 Dakar rumours ???

I haven't heard any rumblings outside of SA. As it has been mentioned, there have been suggestions of expanding to new countries in SA, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Venezuela were among those I've heard mentioned. Logistically, NZ becomes quite difficult for most all involved as is Australia. China, Russia, Mongolia would be nice. I feel that Africa, as fun as the Rally Maroc was last week, is still too tumultuous for a major Dakar effort.

Rule out one but not the other (as far as distance/logistics is concerned)...

The Silk Way Rally could be the key, Russian and Uzbek oil money, start on the red square, include the bikes this time and ship everything back via the black sea. Easy peasy...

The best received rallye landscapes is what i heard from some of the truckers that went there.

So what...? All the new generation rally 450's from KaTooM, Husky, Yamaha and HRC have got high front fender front options...
and Cyril and Speedy have got the "co-operation lansdslide" thing in the mud worked out to a fine art... so where's the problem...???

Americans are struggling just to hold on to the local hare and hound 40 mile loop races in the deserts of the Western states. Between the government and the rapid environmentalist, NO FREAKING WAY! Yes there are miles and miles of beautiful open countryside mostly controlled by the government. And what isn't is broken up very piecemeal between private property, Indian tribes, etc. I imagine it's all Casey Folks (Best in the Desert promoter) can do to continue to run the 500 mile Vegas to Reno race in Nevada. It's just ugly and highly disappointing. The motto here is "Ride while you still can!"

Couldn't a Dakar, or any point to point rally, start in New Zealand with a few days of mountain tracks before boarding a ferry over to Aus ?

I think an Aussie rally sounds great. I don't know anything about the country but Sydney to Perth sounds like a great point to point and is *plenty* long enough - especially if you traipsed up into the Northern Territory.
