The last few weeks I've been working with cross-country to rig up a frame mounted light system for the Baja 1000, this is what we came up with. Starts with the frame mount, using 3xM8 bolts that has a fitted tapped stainless steel backing plate in the steering stem. Also has 2 side hole to bolt up, but we've found they weren't necessary.



With single 8"HID and 2 Squadron LED's

I have the dual BD lapaz HIDs and also a squadron.

How does the squadron compare to the HIDs for throw and general lighting?

I've only used my dual HIDs once but the light throw out is ridiculous - gave me a 1.5km range!!!!

Yea, the HID stuff seems to be going away for sure. I was riding Friday night with my Stryker headlamp and the stock 500 XC-W headlight and I could see pretty well. My buddy was behind me with a Squadron and was really lighting up the trails, it was amazing actually. I'm convinced that a Squadron for a headlight and a Helmet light are all you need for night trail riding. The technology is amazing.

I was spotting deer in the woods with my helmet light all night long, I bet I saw 50 at least and one Porcupine... they're bigger than you think

So are you selling the under and over squadron brackets ?

Will there also be a side by side bracket made ?

Hey I just make the stuff, haven't really ridden much with dual 8" HID's, I'm sure others are much more qualified to answer that, but the Squadrons don't throw anywhere near far enough for speed, good for just about everything else, but I've heard the new OnX's with the prototype long range lenses are good to 80mph racing offroad now! and they're still improving them!

The first 2 plates are 3/8" and are very stiff but can be made to deflect with the dual 8" frame, the RB side plates are 1/4" and flex a bit more, need to test it more before I would call it good, it stiffens right up with 1 or 2 additional standoffs, so in a sense it's tunable. Thing is I've been looking to source 5/16" HDPE and can't find it anywhere in small quantities, Gany I would start with that if I could get some.

Tony is the only one that has ridden it with the dual 8's, they're bolted straight to the 2x 3/8" plates and appear so far to handle it very well, also needs more testing, but these setups are pretty promising.



What the duct tape on the tank?

They dual 8's worked real well on the frame mount. I jumped right into a deep soft sand wash with cold muscles and cold suspension, still I couldnt feel the weight of the lights at all. I also had the Onx mounted to the bottom of the 8's so it was a pretty heavy (and ridiculously bright) setup.

We made a small change on our RB holders by cutting out the center, keeps them a little lighter for those interested.

I have many times in the past and still do just pop down to the supermarket and pick up a bread/chopping board of the right size and thickness in HDPE. You may have to hunt around a bit to find the right store but there is lots to choose from when you do.

ikea sells those cutting boards for about a dollar. Last time I was there I picked up 5 or 6 for use on the rally car...ended up making spring spacers out of one.

I was just there and saw an entire box of them, I even showed them to the wife and laughed about it Paul, I can go back and buy a box of them if you want. They where about 5/16"

I'm over getting the 5/16" got a hold of some from a buddy in San Diego, but already made this and it's working well, so I'm saving it for later, will be heading to Utah this weekend to destroy it.

That looks great! I bolted the Nav tower on the 690 last night, getting ready to beat on it soon.....
