I've done a bit of testing with the Onx LEDs (Baja Designs newest LED) and they are close but not quite there. I bet that the optics to make them competitive with the HIDs exist just not enough of them to sell to you and me.

They have been using the same Halogens for at least 10 years. I have never seen or heard of them using HIDs before. I asked Henge about that in '06 or '07 and he told me he prefered the color of the Halogens. The guy who he was with also commented on the unreliability of HIDs. That was true then but not so much now.
Edit: and then he fucking murdered me to death for telling me.

It's also the wattage draw isn't it? Watt for output is far greater.

I know Jcr use a special engine casing which is wider to accommodate the larger stator to drive the presumably north of 200 watts halogens.

That's where the hids come into their own - 2 x 35 watt hids are very similar to the 200 watt halogens

I like the h4 bulbs my self using 1-100/85 watt High low and 1-65/55 watt High low bulb.
