i'm going to have to one-up you, noel. somewhere in one of my old boxes of photos, there's a pic of me in all my mulleted glory, sitting on kevin's actual 500cc GP bike. i worked at bates leathers in summer '89, and somehow the boss finagled the american suzuki boss to let us borrow it for an open house we were doing. i'll have to dig it up and scan it. prepare to laugh at me, if you don't already.

1970 & 1980 XS650 riding to Vegas

Two of my friends have restored 1970 and 1980 Yamaha XS650's. They plan to ride the Adventure Bike route on day two from Barstow to Vegas.

I rode with them on my KTM in case I had to tow one of them out and we did a shake down ride in our local Sierra Nevada Mountains last Saturday to see how many parts would fall off and what adjustments needed to be made before they take them to Vegas during Thanksgiving.

The 1970 XS650 is mainly stock but the 1980 XS650 has been mounted in a Champion Frame and is much lighter than the 1970 XS. It has parts on it from over 15 different bikes.

Both bikes did amazingly well considering what we put them through on the trail. They were ridden hard and put away wet. The biggest problem is they don't have much ground clearance and can easily get high centered as you will see in the video.

Here is a video I shot with my iPhone on the trail of what you can do with a 42 and 32 year old Yamaha:

The 1980 Yamaha XS650 is a conglomeration of a bunch of differt bike parts all mounted in a Champion Frame:

Don't know why I can't insert this picture. I click on the "insert image" and then paste the url and all I get is the red X in a box. What am I doing wrong?
