Mojave Road
I did the Mojave Road last weekend on a KTM 950 Adv, which was only loaded with a tank bag, small backpack strapped to the seat and pelican case for tools.
There's alot of soft sand on this trail, which requires you to ride at speed to stay afloat. On the 950 Adv, standing up on the pegs really helps stabilize the big bike. I'd say it's an intermediate ride, mostly because of all the soft stuff. Pretty country for sure. Having to dab with pannier bags could be hazardous for your legs. There's ALOT of sand. You should start earlier than we did (10am!). Started in Afton Cyn and didn't arrive at AVI casino until 7pm, but there was a full moon and it was fun. I'd start at 7am if you're running fully loaded. We did the ride both ways over Saturday & Sunday. Soda dry lake was passable, just don't drift off the beaten path. Your fuel range should make it possible to do the entire route without a pit stop. From Afton Cyn, nearest gas is in Baker, Ca. Take a GPS with the route, cell phone (and SPOT if you have one). Don't do it solo. It's pretty remote. Good luck. |

I'm in the same boat with a few AZ. plated bikes...... but it hasn't been an issue in CA. to date.......I just try to remain low profile....

Tom, as you know, I have a place in Bullhead City and I'm very familiar with the stretch from the CO. river to Barstow........ but I've never ridden the stretch from the CO. river to Prescott.....looking forward to riding that stretch with you at some point.....

I posted GPS tracks on Dual Sport Maps a couple of years ago along with all the POI waypoints from Dennis Casebier's Mojave Road Guide which I encourage everyone to purchase/read before you ride the Mojave Rd: http://www.desertusa.com/web_cart/db/pages/5094.html
Go here for the CORE tracks I loaded: http://www.dualsportmaps.com/?link=106920 I generally recommend folks riding across from Barstow "loop it" once they hit the poleline near Ft. Piute.....ride over Christmas Tree Pass on the way into Laughlin and ride along the river then Mojave Rd. on the way back out the next day.....
