Anyone in or near Elko, NV

Well it looks like I will be moving to Elko this spring. I am looking for riding buddies as well as people who can give me info on the area, riding areas of course but also where to look at houses, certain home builders to avoid etc.

Dredging up an old thread here to see if there is an Elko or north east Nevada general bullshit thread?

I don't think there are many ADV folk in that region. I lived in Battle Mountain for a while and miss it dearly. There is some incredible riding in Northern NV... and no one around to bother you!

I Are Elkos

Howdy OP,

I live in Elko, but I'm a baby baby new beginner. So, not sure how much fun that would be for you. I'm on my first bike, and still working on my liscense (have permit).

I've got pretty good access to Hamilton Stage, and the trail network through the valley around South Fork.

Current Goal: Figure out how to get on top of Grindstone (been there before, but not on the bike.)

Welcome to the area! :)

Thanks for the welcome to Elko! Welcome to the asylum, you are now a FF/inmate/etc..

Congrats on getting your license soon. That was a big deal for me. I still remember the tests like it was yesterday, even though its been almost 30 years! Don't be bashful about being new, we all had to start somewhere AND I can ride as slow as anyone.

Hamilton Stage, South Fork, Grindstone are all new names to me, I will look them up on the map and think about riding those areas when it dries out. After such a dry winter I am not going to complain for a second about rain though.

Map

Here's a 33Mi track I made the other day with some landmarks.

I got chased off by a rainy cloud. By my figuring some spots were really slick and any extra moisture at the time would have made a mess beyond my current skill level ^_^

Anyhow, good times!

I was thinking about moving up there.
Build an off-grid cabin somewhere.

Looking at google maps/earth i didn't see anything up there to ride.
Looks like i am wrong.

That'll Do!

Hey guys!

Unless there are any objections, I guess this is good a place as any for an Elko/North East NV BS thread as Anomad described.

I'm subscribed, and I welcome anyone in the area or curious about the area to contribute as they see fit.

I'll try to do some basic ride reports (weekend warrior ^_^) and see how things develop. I'll add the disclaimer here that I'm totally NOOB as my oddometer suggests, and I have no idea what I'm doing :)

Now if we can just get this rain outta here we'll be in business!

Wet!

No real news here, just wet!

I think a saw somewhere that this may is shaping up to be a record for rainfall in the area. Fingers crossed for a little drying out, or this newb might have a mini-adventure with adverse conditions.

Quick putt around town in the rain was OK, but looking forward to getting back out to explore more trails.

Enjoy the Holiday!

A wet May after a very dry and warm winter still leaves us in a tough situation regarding water in the big picture... Hopefully its snowing up in the mountains and that will carry us into summer. I drove through Wells today and the Humboldts looked like they had a lot of fresh snow, awfully high up though.

Honestly I haven't started the bike since I moved here. Busy with the new job and getting settled in. I have ridden my pedal bike to work daily and up to the top of Lamoille Canyon and a few other places. (Lamoille was a wheezer, but coming down was fun)

What are you riding? I have the ubiquitous DR650 with a big tank and upgraded suspension.

Pedal bikes are good! I'm close enough to trails that it makes for a good reconnaissance tool.

I opted for a KTM 690. I know how that must sound: Newb + too much bike =

But! EFI map is set to "mild" and I have a lot of respect for the machine, and its ability to seriously injure and/or kill me. I wanted something to grow into; maybe I'll have it all wore out before I'm skilled enough to ride it. But for now, I proceed with caution and I really enjoy it.

Stick family stickers featured prominently on the wind screen remind me to keep my head out of dark, stinky places.

At any rate, looking forward to more rides, we'll see what tomorrow brings!
