We lived just a hundred yards or so up this road on the right.

A tiny house where 4 brothers shared the same bedroom...stacked on top of each other like cord wood...two bunk beds for sleeping and two dressers to stuff our clothes into. Personal space was at a premium.

The neighborhood matriarch, Margret Miller, ruled her subjects with and iron hand. The Millers lived across the road on the hillside and occasionally Margret would make an appearance on her front porch and let out a belch like a sailor that would echo across the valley for several minutes just to let everyone know she was still in charge. Margret Miller was old then....but to a 12 year old 35 was ancient. She is still living BTW.....in that same house......ruling the neighborhood with that same firm hand. Some things never change.

Four Burkhart boys, four Travis kids and two Miller boys made up the usual suspects and there was sometimes a few occasional stray kids that made their way into the fray.

In the hot summer days Margret would frequently announce that she would be taking all of the neighborhood kids swimming. That was the highlight of my summer days....I just loved it.

We would all grab our towels and anything else that we wanted to take and she would lead us like the Pied Piper down the road to the swimming hole in Duck Creek.

And this is that same swimming hole as it looks today...........

And it looked exactly the same 45 years ago. Yep....some things never change.

Just a photo of us out enjoying the water that surrounds us. Let's hit the water next year for some photos... Have kayaks, will travel.

Great stuff so far, Denny.

I'd be up for that, Tim. I'd love to give kayaking a try

This picture was taken from the bridge where Killwell Run meets Duck Creek. There used to be a railroad trestle that crossed here also.................

You can still see the wooden abutments for the railroad bridge............

I can remember the smells of the creosote soaked railroad ties that we walked across to get down to the creek.

This giant oak still casts an imposing shadow on the swimming hole......

It's water battered roots standing the test of time...

My feet remember the first step into that cool water, walking out into deeper areas and the feel of the stones against calloused soles.

Damn................................what memories.

The Ohio River is born in Pittsburgh with the joining of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers and flows for 981 miles to the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois. And it's a busy waterway to both water and aircraft.

Aircraft??

Yep....................aircraft..........

I was being watched with suspicion as I was taking these pictures of the geese......

The Muskingum River travels from it's beginning at Coschoton, Ohio, 111 miles to Marietta where it joins the Ohio.

The rivers have a life of their own......and they seem to change from day to day.

Rural livin' does have it's benefits. One of those is a relaxed environment. And one of the ways I like to relax is casting a line into the waters of some fine farm ponds.

Check these out.....

And out of those ponds..............

Oh my.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful posts and your gorgeous photography.
There is a lovely tranquility to your writing and the beautiful countryside that you obviously love, despite your loss.

I like your style!

I knew the leaves would not be around much longer so with a day of beautiful weather I put some errands on ignore, fired the DRZ to life and went for a little ride. Just to get things straight from here on out......this RR is for ADVriders, not rats. I just want to clarify that. No rats, OK? And just to emphasize that even more......here's a picture.....

NO RATS ALLOWD!!!!!!!!!

I was takin' pics not long after leafing the house.

The DRZ is serving me well. As much as I liked the KLR250 I like the DRZ. I never was much of an off-roader so I don't really need a true dualsport bike and the DRZ is taking me everywhere I need it to...for now.

The yeller DRZ blends in rather nicely, don't it?

The colors in southeastern Ohio aren't as brilliant as in other parts of the country but there are some areas of bright color that really pop.
