Epic? Well, it was WET!!!

The four of us, Martijn, Willem, Paul and I went on an adventurous, wet and slipper enduro weekend in the Douzy hills, just south of the Belgian Ardennes. In fact these are still the Ardennes, the very south tip an the French department 'Ardennes'.

Anyway, the weather forecast wasn't too good and they were spot on. It was bad, really bad except for the Sunday morning. No rain! But it was still muddy and slippery as hell!

See for yourself :)

First day, first mud pit. Not easy getting these muddy pigs out, I can tell!
About the area, it is mostly rolling hills with some steep bits. Not too rocky although there's some around, most of it is forest soil, clay like stuff. like ice when wet.

TKC 80's are not the right tires for these conditions...

Martijn thought that speed would get him through. Not!
The 'road' went through here so he figured 'rev it and blast through' ;)

What can I say, it just kept on pouring!
With all water flowing downhill there were these 1 meter deep puddles lower down. Serious fun!

This was actually a closed section of the woods where the French used to ride their can-can's. Quads. Lots of deep trenches, this was easy. Too bad i didn't take more pics!

Trying to find a paved road somewhere cause we had to head back home on time. No such luck, this mud trail went on fore ever and dead-ended with barbed wire :(

I can tell you that the hot shower was most welcome at the end of the day. And I'm so glad we had to take a hotel as the cabins on the near by campground were already closed for winter. Very glad!

More pics

Here's a few more pics...

Very sticky stuff this mud.

The hotel was very happy with us. We dried our gear in front of our room. The other guests loved the authentic smell!

Using sticks to stand on. The mud was like at least 3 meters deep and alive, ready to swallow man and machine!

Getting up here (and down, and up cause we couldn't continue) was really hard. Ended up pushing the bike while in first gear...

And than, a dry moment!!!

Great photos! Brings back fun 40 year old memories of me and my friends dragging our bikes out of similar trail conditions. Mother Nature sure can turn an easy day's travels into a memorable ride.:

Cheers

Our base was Douzy, the tracks all to the south-east/west. First track starts about 6 or 7 kms from the hotel.
